Use this whip dril to feel your elbow staying loose and whippy! #SoftballPitching #PitchingCoach #PitchingTips #softballpitcher #pitchingdrills
When I first started working on my softball pitching, one of the biggest challenges was keeping my elbow relaxed and flexible throughout the pitching motion. The whip drill is a fantastic exercise to develop that loose, whipping action in the elbow, which not only helps increase pitch speed but also reduces the risk of injury. This drill focuses on allowing your elbow to naturally follow the momentum of the arm as it comes forward, without locking or stiffening. You start by mimicking the pitching motion slowly, intentionally keeping the elbow relaxed and feeling the whip-like snap that should occur just before releasing the ball. Over time, this ingrains muscle memory, so when you pitch at full speed, your elbow stays loose and effective. Incorporating the whip drill into your regular training routine can significantly improve your delivery mechanics. It’s a drill easily done without equipment and is excellent for pitchers at any level who want to refine their technique. Combining it with other pitching exercises, like arm circles and shoulder mobility work, further enhances your throwing efficiency. From personal experience, practicing the whip drill daily has made my pitches smoother and more powerful. Plus, I have noticed less elbow discomfort compared to when my arm felt rigid. I encourage every softball pitcher to give this drill a try and focus on the sensation of a fluid, whippy elbow—it truly makes a difference in your overall pitching effectiveness.
