Mornings like these are my favorite.
One of the biggest blessings of coaching in the evenings is that I get to spend my days with Maverick before heading to the pitching facility. These quiet walks remind me why I work so hard.
While we’re out here, I wanted to share a few things I won’t be teaching your daughter at Twisted Seams Pitching Academy… #Softballpitcher #pitchingcoach #pitchingtips
As someone deeply involved in softball pitching coaching, I appreciate the importance of focusing on fundamentals and safe mechanics. For example, one widespread misconception I've encountered is the emphasis on forcing the hand to roll over at the pitch. While “internal rotation” is a popular term, it often gets confused or treated as a fad. In reality, this motion should happen naturally without unnecessary coaching that forces it, which can lead to improper mechanics. Another crucial point is the debate around hopping off the ground during a pitch. Although rule adjustments have made it legal, I personally opt not to teach this technique due to concerns about many young players not dragging properly and risking injury or diminished performance. I believe that sticking to proven, safe methods builds a stronger foundation. Speed before accuracy is another area where I advise caution. Many parents and young athletes want to throw hard right away, but speed without control can do more harm than good. It’s essential that pitchers focus first on developing precise mechanics and consistent spots on the plate, letting their velocity naturally increase over time as a result of hard work and experience. These priorities have shaped the coaching philosophy at Twisted Seams Pitching Academy. By nurturing accurate, controlled pitching instead of rushing to gain speed or enforcing forced motions, players build confidence and sustainable skills. It’s these subtle yet impactful choices that make a significant difference in long-term player development and passion for the game. If you’re a parent or young pitcher, understanding what not to focus on can be as valuable as knowing the right drills. Avoid rushing velocity, forced hand rolls, and questionable pitching moves that may seem trendy but could hinder growth. Instead, embrace gradual improvement, natural mechanics, and accuracy first—as these are the true markers of success in softball pitching.
