Want better spin? Give yourself MORE chances to practice it. 🥎🔥
I love having pitchers rehearse the spin before they even start the pitch. It’s a quick way to remind your hand and your brain exactly what you’re trying to create before putting the whole motion together.
Spin is SUCH a huge part of pitching, but it’s also one of the easiest things to rush past.
You’re already practicing… so why not practice the spin too?! 👏
Small reps add up. 🥎 #SoftballPitching #Pitchingtips #PitchingDrills
From my experience as a softball pitcher, focusing on spin separately from the full pitching motion can make a significant difference. Before I throw an actual pitch, I always dedicate a moment to practice the spin with just my wrist and fingers. This kind of deliberate spin rehearsal helps to activate muscle memory more effectively than trying to incorporate spin at once during a full pitch. Try this approach: before you begin your pitching practice or even games, spend 5 to 10 minutes doing spin drills. Stand still or with minimal movement, and repeat the spin feeling you want on the ball, imagining the desired rotation and speed. By doing so, your brain and hand establish a clear connection on how to produce the optimal spin. What I’ve noticed is that when you rush the spin during pitching, performance often suffers because it becomes a mechanical afterthought. Practicing spin beforehand reduces that rush by making the spin a habitual component. Small practice reps compound over time, improving control, pitch movement, and ultimately, the effectiveness of each throw. Another tip is to film your spin drills. Watching slow-motion videos can help you identify weaknesses and ensure your spin looks consistent and powerful. Incorporating slow-motion video analysis has helped me refine my technique significantly. Overall, don’t overlook the importance of spin drills in your pitching routine. They are quick, focused, and deliver long-term benefits. Give yourself more chances to practice spin before every pitch and watch your pitching skills level up!
