5 things our grandmothersknew about anxiety (and we forgot)

5 days agoEdited to

... Read moreReflecting on my own struggles with anxiety, I've realized how much modern approaches often overlook the wisdom embedded in traditional practices. Our grandmothers intuitively understood that overthinking alone doesn't ease anxiety—they emphasized moving the body and staying engaged through physical tasks. I've found that when I take a walk, tend to my garden, or even do simple crafts, my mind feels less overwhelmed, which echoes this age-old advice. Another practice that resonates deeply is the power of conversation. Instead of isolating themselves, grandmothers valued sitting with someone, sharing fears, and speaking worries out loud. This social connection acted as a natural therapy. I've personally experienced how confiding in a close friend or family member can diffuse anxiety more effectively than bottling it up. Moreover, the idea that sometimes a hard day is just that—a hard day—and not a catastrophe to be feared, has been liberating. This perspective helps prevent the spiraling thoughts that often escalate anxiety symptoms. Accepting discomfort without assigning labels has encouraged me to live more in the present. I've also embraced modern tools inspired by these traditional methods, such as journaling apps that allow for 'getting it out before you sleep,' mirroring the grandmothers' way of catharsis. Integrating these practices holistically has made my management of anxiety more balanced and accessible. These insights remind me that revisiting simple, human-centered strategies can be profoundly healing.

At 69, I understand this completely. An interesting book I started reading(I know thinking your way through anxiety is ineffective) is by the black female author, Tina Michelle. It's entitled, "Everyone's Winning But Me: You Are Not Behind - Stop Comparing, Start Healing, and Reclaim the Truth About Your Worth." Reading it occasionally helps give perspective for those moments that feel like you're in overload. Remember that we are nature, not just a part of it, and nature isn't in a hurry - it just ebbs and flows. Activity places one in a state of flow and rest completes the cycle.

Does anxiety ever actually go away?
There was a time when I couldn’t sleep for days. Nothing was wrong, but my body acted like it was. My heart would race, my chest felt heavy, and my thoughts just wouldn’t stop. I kept asking myself, “Why can’t I relax if everything’s fine?” I’d toss and turn all night, getting more frustrated

Anxiety isn’t just being nervous. It’s the invisible version that never really shuts off — replaying conversations, worrying about things that haven’t even happened, and trying to look calm while your body’s in fight-or-flight mode. I think a lot of people picture anxiety as panic attacks, but
