Wining state last year was a amazing feeling I was determined to break the state record, but I guess God had different plans for me and now my goal is to win my freshman year🥇
It's one thing to win state, but breaking a state record? That's a whole different level of dedication and precision. When I think about that goal, my coach immediately comes to mind. They're not just someone who stands on the sidelines; they're the architect of my progress, especially when the goal is as ambitious as setting a new state standard. For me, the journey to even attempt to break a state record starts with the fundamentals, and this is where a great coach shines. In pole vault, every micro-movement counts. My coach has this incredible ability to break down complex actions into manageable steps. We spend countless hours on the runway approach, perfecting the rhythm and speed. Then it’s about the plant – ensuring the pole hits the box perfectly, channeling all that kinetic energy. I remember my coach constantly telling me, 'It's all about the connection with the pole. Feel the bend, trust it!' Without that detailed feedback, I’d be guessing. We'd go over video analysis, frame by frame, identifying tiny adjustments that, when combined, make a massive difference in clearance height. They taught me how to truly 'ride' the pole, maximizing the swing and turn, pushing off at the peak of the bend to gain those crucial extra inches. Beyond the physical mechanics, the mental game in pole vault is immense, especially when you're aiming for a record. There's a lot of pressure, and sometimes fear, particularly when approaching new heights. My coach is my rock in those moments. They teach me visualization techniques, helping me ‘see’ myself clearing the bar before I even take my first step. We talk about managing nerves, transforming that anticipation into focused energy. During competitions, their presence is so calming. Just a quick glance, and I know exactly what I need to adjust, or sometimes, just a nod of encouragement is enough to remind me to trust my training. They help me stay positive, even when a jump doesn’t go as planned, always emphasizing learning from every attempt. Training isn't just about jumping, either. To truly aim for a state record, strength, flexibility, and overall conditioning are paramount. My coach designs personalized workout plans that target specific muscle groups essential for pole vaulting – core strength, shoulder stability, explosive leg power. We do a lot of plyometrics, weightlifting, and flexibility exercises. They always make sure I’m focusing on proper form to prevent injuries, which is so important when you're pushing your body to its limits. Recovery is also a huge part of the plan; they educate me on nutrition and rest, understanding that my body needs to be in peak condition to perform consistently at a record-breaking level. Being part of the MKE TRACK & FIELD community and having access to these structured programs and expert guidance has been invaluable. There were times last year, even after winning state, when I felt the record was just out of reach. It was disheartening. But my coach was there, reminding me that progress isn't linear. They helped me recalibrate, understand that sometimes 'God has different plans,' as I felt, but those plans can also include a new path to the same ultimate goal. They helped me see that my freshman year goal isn't just to win state, but to truly dominate and etch my name in the record books. It's a journey, not a single jump. Every practice, every lift, every mental preparation session is a step closer. My coach instilled in me the belief that with consistent effort and smart training, breaking that state record is not just a dream, but an achievable milestone. I'm so grateful for their unwavering support and expertise on this incredible journey.
