DIML as a college student!

Starting college was a whirlwind, and my "Day in My Life" (DIML) looks vastly different now than it did in high school. It’s a constant juggle of academics, social life, and personal growth. I wanted to share a typical day, not just the highlights, so you can get a real sense of what student life is like here in Utah! My alarm usually goes off around 6:30 AM, but I admit, the snooze button is a very close friend. Once I’m finally up, it’s a quick breakfast (usually a granola bar or yogurt) and getting ready for my first class. I try to get to campus a bit early to grab a coffee and review my notes for the day’s lectures. Those early morning classes can be tough, but I genuinely love learning new things, even if it means dragging myself out of bed. Sometimes, I’ll squeeze in a short study session at the library if I have a break between morning classes, just to keep ahead. Lunch break is absolutely crucial! I usually meet up with friends at the dining hall, or we might venture out to a local cafe near campus for a change of scenery. Afternoons are often packed with more lectures, hands-on lab sessions, or intense group project meetings. Balancing different deadlines and group dynamics can be a challenge, but it's also where some of my best learning happens. I try to fit in some exercise most afternoons—whether it’s a trip to the campus gym for a quick workout or a refreshing jog around the beautiful university grounds. On certain days, I also volunteer or attend club meetings, which are fantastic for making new friends, expanding my network, and just breaking up the academic routine. Dinner is usually a more relaxed affair with my roommates or other friends. We often cook together or order in. Then, the real work begins: the bulk of my homework and studying. This is where good time management truly comes into play! I’ve learned to prioritize tasks, break down big assignments, and fight off the urge to procrastinate. Before finally calling it a night, I like to unwind by reading a book, watching an episode of my favorite show, or catching up with family. It’s so important to decompress after a long, demanding day to avoid burnout. If you’re a fellow college student, or thinking about becoming one, here are a few tips I've picked up for thriving in your own DIML: Time Management is Your Best Friend: Seriously, invest in a good planner or use a digital calendar. Schedule everything—classes, study blocks, workouts, and even dedicated social time. It helps visualize your day and prevents things from slipping through the cracks. Prioritize Sleep: It’s incredibly tempting to pull all-nighters, but quality sleep makes a monumental difference in your focus, mood, and overall well-being. Your brain needs that rest! Find Your Study Sanctuary: Whether it’s the quiet corner of the library, a bustling coffee shop, or even just your dorm room when your roommate is out, find where you’re most productive and can concentrate without distractions. Get Involved Beyond Academics: Joining clubs, sports teams, or volunteer groups can truly enrich your college experience. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people, explore new interests, and build a supportive community. Self-Care is Non-Negotiable: Take breaks, do things you genuinely enjoy, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you're feeling overwhelmed. College is a marathon, not a sprint, and your mental and physical health are paramount. Explore Your Surroundings: Living in Utah means there are so many incredible outdoor activities at our doorstep. Take advantage of them on weekends to clear your head and recharge! A hike or a trip to a national park can be a game-changer. My college DIML is a constant learning experience, full of its own unique ups and downs. It's challenging, no doubt, but also incredibly rewarding. Every day brings something new, and I feel like I'm growing so much both academically and personally.
