Attending the Lunar New Year celebrations at Lan Su Chinese Garden offers an immersive way to connect with Asian culture and traditions right in Portland, Oregon. The year of the Fire Horse is considered special and energetic, making the festivities particularly lively and memorable. During the event, I found the dragon and light show to be the highlight, providing a spectacular display that genuinely captivated the audience in the evening. However, the cultural performances, including traditional lion dances, added a rich layer of heritage and excitement throughout the day. The craft activities were a great family-friendly option, allowing visitors to engage hands-on and create keepsakes to remember the celebration. One of my favorite stops was the Yun Shui Teahouse, where you can enjoy a serene atmosphere along with a variety of teas. The Red Dragon tea stood out for its robust flavor and cultural significance, enhancing the overall experience. As someone who follows a plant-based diet, finding vegan options such as the black sesame donut from HeyDay was a delightful surprise, proving that traditional celebrations can be enjoyed by everyone. The food offerings also included fried spring rolls and five-spiced shredded tofu skin with rice, which offered authentic flavors and textures that complemented the festive mood. Sampling these dishes while surrounded by beautiful garden scenery heightened my appreciation for the event. Overall, visiting Lan Su Chinese Garden for the Lunar New Year celebration is not just about the visual spectacles but also about embracing community, culture, and cuisine. It's an enriching experience for locals and tourists alike. If you have the chance to visit before March 8th, I highly recommend immersing yourself in the festivities—it’s truly a beautiful and fun way to welcome the new lunar year.
