The science behind pour over☕️🤎

Our Pour Over Coffee Maker has been one of our favorite Christmas gifts!

We did some research because we were curious as to WHY it was so much better than our standard coffee maker!❓❓❓

1️⃣ When you make a pour over, you have complete control! The grounds can get evenly submerged in water and you can set the pace of the pour based on the pace that the water is making its way through.

…Why does this matter??

- In drip, the water constantly submerged the same section of grounds. It often results in standing water. While this eventually spreads to the outside beans to gather some extra flavor before the drip is over, a majority of the drip pulls from the same central grounds and can produce a less flavorful, more watery brew. Constantly pulling from the same grounds can also result in more of a residue at the bottom of your pot. When you evenly control a pour over, you can get the most out of all the grounds in your filter! Resulting in a smoother, more flavorful brew.🤎

2️⃣ After the first initial pour of the pour over, nicknamed “the bloom”, the brewer (you) pauses to allow the grounds to swell as water is absorbed and carbon monoxide is released.. along with the bitter taste that is paired with it.

This had a larger impact on the flavor than you would assume!

Where these are the main two flavor differentiators between drip and pour over, there are other minor factors you could look at that come into play with crafting the perfect pour over!!☕️

Things like…

🤎grind size

🤎measure of grounds

🤎timing of your pour (it’s recommended to pour in four sequences, each increasing the amount of water released)

🤎water temperature

… affect the outcome of your pour over!

I hope you learned something! I did!!🫶🏻 Happy caffeinating! ☕️☕️

2025/1/6 Edited to

... Read morePour over coffee techniques elevate the brewing experience for enthusiasts. One key advantage is the ability to control saturation and extraction, allowing each ground to contribute fully to the flavor profile. In contrast, drip coffee often uses a fixed water path, leading to uneven extraction and potential bitterness. The bloom phase, achieved through an initial pour, allows gases and bitterness to escape, enhancing flavor clarity. Factors such as grind size, water temperature, and pouring technique critically impact the final taste. Experimenting with these variables can lead to a customized, flavorful result, transforming your daily cup. Whether you're a novice or an expert, understanding these nuances helps in crafting the ideal brew, illustrating the art and science behind perfecting pour over coffee!
