... Read moreOkay, so let's talk triceps! If you're like me, you've probably stood in the gym wondering, "French press vs. skull crusher: which one should I do today?" I used to think they were interchangeable, but after trying both extensively, I've realized they truly offer a 'same muscle, different burn' experience, as my picture even says! First, let's break down the French Press. This is typically an overhead triceps extension, often done with a dumbbell or barbell. What I love about the French press exercise is the incredible stretch it puts on the long head of the triceps. When I perform it, I focus on keeping my elbows pointing forward, not flaring out, and lowering the weight slowly behind my head. It feels like a deep, controlled stretch that really targets the muscle from a unique angle. For me, it's a fantastic way to overload the triceps at their most stretched position. I usually do this seated or standing to engage my core a bit more, but you can also do a lying French press if you want more stability. Now, onto the Skull Crusher – possibly the most intimidating name for an exercise! This is a lying triceps extension, usually done on a bench with an EZ bar, barbell, or dumbbells. The main difference with skull crushers vs. French press is the angle and how it isolates the triceps. I find that skull crushers allow for a really strong peak contraction at the top. When I perform them, I make sure my upper arms stay stationary, only moving my forearms. This strict form is crucial to avoid putting strain on your elbows or shoulders. I've found that using dumbbells for skull crushers gives me a bit more freedom of movement and allows each arm to work independently, which is great if you have any muscular imbalances. So, are skull crushers and French press the same? While both are excellent for building impressive triceps and target the same muscle group, they definitely aren't identical. The 'difference between French press and skull crushers' really comes down to the range of motion and the stability required. The French press, especially overhead, often demands more shoulder stability and hits the triceps in a more stretched position. Skull crushers tend to provide a more direct, isolated contraction, allowing you to really squeeze the triceps at the top. When it comes to my triceps workout, I often cycle between them or include both on different days. If I'm looking for maximum stretch and overall triceps development, I lean towards the French press. If I want to really isolate and get that intense peak contraction, skull crushers are my go-to. Both are phenomenal triceps killers and can seriously humble you, as I mentioned before! Just remember to start with lighter weights to master your form, keep those elbows tucked, and really focus on feeling that burn. Incorporating either into your routine will definitely help you sculpt stronger, more defined arms. Give them a try on your next upper body day and see which 'burn' you prefer!
