... Read moreMy winter trip to Iceland was truly magical, especially visiting in December around Christmas! If you're thinking of going during the colder months, here are a few extra tips and personal insights to make your adventure even better. First off, packing is key! I layered up like crazy – thermal base layers, a good fleece, a waterproof and windproof outer jacket, and insulated trousers were non-negotiable. Don't forget a warm hat, gloves, and waterproof boots with good grip, especially for walking around places like the Golden Circle or if you're chasing waterfalls like Skógafoss. The weather can change in an instant, so being prepared means you can truly enjoy the breathtaking landscapes without freezing. One of the absolute highlights of a winter trip is the chance to see the Northern Lights. While it's never guaranteed, December offers long, dark nights, increasing your odds. We booked a dedicated Northern Lights tour, which I highly recommend. They know the best spots away from city lights and constantly monitor the forecast. It was an unforgettable experience watching the vibrant green lights dance across the sky – truly bucket list material! Speaking of relaxation, the Sky Lagoon was an absolute dream. I’ve heard about other lagoons, but Sky Lagoon's infinity pool experience overlooking the ocean was just incredible, especially with snow on the ground. Go for the 7-step ritual; it's so rejuvenating after a day of exploring. I recommend booking your slot in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure you get your preferred time. Exploring Reykjavík during Christmas was charming. The city was adorned with festive lights, and there was a really cozy atmosphere. We stumbled upon the "JOLAKOTTURINN yule cat" decorations, which added a unique local touch to the holiday spirit. Don't miss exploring the shops around the Old Harbour – perfect for picking up some unique Icelandic souvenirs. And definitely pop into Hallgrímskirkja; the views from the top are spectacular, even in winter. For those venturing beyond Reykjavík, the Golden Circle is a must-do, even in winter. While some roads might be trickier, organized tours handle all the logistics, so you can just sit back and enjoy Þingvellir National Park, the powerful Gullfoss waterfall (which looks incredible surrounded by ice), and the Geysir geothermal area. Just remember to wear those good walking shoes as paths can be slippery! Lastly, don't shy away from trying some local Icelandic cuisine. From hearty lamb stew to fresh seafood, it’s the perfect comfort food after a day out in the cold. My December trip to Iceland was an epic adventure, full of natural wonders and cozy festive vibes. I hope these extra tips help you plan your own unforgettable journey!
