Did anyone NOT get their nails done?
It can be hundreds of dollars, sometimes even limit your functionality, the functionality and movements of your hands, and does not seem to serve any actual useful purpose. Useful purpose for example would be a backpack to carry items or tying hair back or even cutting it to keep it out of your face. I've women and men activity struggle to do basic tasks because they have their nails decorated to a point that makes it hard for them to use their hands for everyday tasks. I've seen women cry and become enraged because something happened to their $100+ dollar nails. None of this makes sense to me.
What is the practical, useful purpose of decorating your fingernails and why are people willing to waste hundreds of dollars on it?
Why is decorating your nails worth not being able to use your hands properly? What does it matter what someone's nails look like so long as they are not filthy ?
I totally get the appeal of beautiful nails for some people, but honestly, for me, the cons often outweigh the pros. When I see those incredibly artistic, long, pointed fingernails, sometimes even adorned with intricate 3D fruit and insect designs like tiny strawberries, blueberries, or even little ladybugs, I can't help but wonder: how do you do anything? From my perspective, practicality is key. I've personally found that even moderately long nails can make simple daily tasks a real challenge. Imagine trying to type an email at work without clacking away, or fumbling with buttons and zippers on your clothes. Cooking becomes a whole new adventure – peeling vegetables, kneading dough, or even just washing dishes can feel impossible without worrying about chipping a nail (or worse, getting food stuck under them!). And let's not even start on opening a soda can or picking up a small coin from a flat surface. It’s these everyday little struggles that really make me question the functional trade-off. Beyond the functionality, there's the health aspect. I've heard stories and seen my own friends deal with damaged natural nails after acrylics or gels, sometimes leading to thinning, breakage, or even fungal infections if not properly cared for. The chemicals involved and the constant UV light exposure for gel manicures are also things I'd rather avoid for the long term. My natural nails might not be perfectly manicured all the time, but they feel strong and healthy, and that's important to me. Then there's the sheer time commitment. Think about the hours spent at the salon – the initial application, then fill-ins every few weeks. That’s a significant chunk of time that I'd rather spend on other hobbies or just relaxing. And if something does happen to an elaborate nail, the stress and cost of getting it repaired can be immense. I've witnessed the frustration and even tears when a beautifully decorated nail breaks, and it just reinforces my choice to keep things simple. For me, embracing natural nails or opting for a simple, short polish at home gives me the best of both worlds: a touch of color if I want it, without sacrificing my ability to live my life fully and freely.
