As a parent navigating the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) journey, small disruptions, like forgetting to charge your child's iPad, can unexpectedly trigger significant distress. From personal experience, I’ve found that technology devices are not just entertainment—they often serve as critical communication tools or calming mechanisms for children with autism. When my son’s iPad battery runs out, it’s not just about recharging a device; it’s about managing his anxiety and helping him cope with sudden changes. To mitigate this, I’ve developed a few helpful strategies: Firstly, establishing a clear routine around device use and charging helps set expectations. We keep the iPad on a charger station in the same spot every evening, so it becomes part of the daily wind-down routine. This consistency reduces surprises. Secondly, I prepare backup activities that are just as engaging but don’t rely on electronics—such as sensory toys or picture cards—to transition smoothly when technology isn’t available. Finally, I communicate openly about what’s happening. Even simple explanations, adjusted to your child’s understanding level, can help ease frustration. These small but intentional steps can empower parents and caregivers in the autism community. Recognizing that devices like iPads may be essential tools rather than just gadgets is key. By anticipating potential setbacks like a low battery and planning accordingly, we can better support our children’s needs and maintain a calm, supportive environment.

Why ADHD and autism diagnoses matter
I thought I was autistic for a year or so before I was formally diagnosed. And as far as ADHD goes, I was pretty sure I had it for several years before I was evaluated. So, imagine my lack of surprise when I was dual evaluated for both and it was determined that I am indeed AuDHD. But something
