She Told Me What She Needed Without Words 💜
Bella may be nonverbal, but she communicates with me in so many different ways. 💜
From the moment we walked into the store, she knew what she wanted. I gave her room to look around, make her choices, and show me what had her attention.
Later, when she needed help opening her candy, she brought it straight to me. I helped her get it started, and from there, she took over. 🌸
No words were needed.
Moments like these may look small from the outside, but they continue teaching me to pay attention to all the ways Bella communicates — what she chooses, what she brings to me, when she asks for help, and when she’s ready to do something herself.
I’m still learning her language every day. 💜

Being a parent of a nonverbal child like Bella brings unique experiences that redefine communication. From my own journey, I've learned that communication is not just about words but about attentiveness, patience, and understanding subtle gestures. For example, when Bella selects something in a store, it’s her way of expressing choice and preference, reflecting her personality and interests. One of the most meaningful moments is seeing how she signals when she needs assistance, such as bringing the candy to me for help opening it. This simple act conveys trust and connection without a single word spoken. I've realized that these interactions build a strong emotional bond and teach me to be more present and responsive to nonverbal cues. Supporting a nonverbal child also means creating an environment that respects their communication style. Tools like picture cards, visual schedules, or simply observing behaviors closely can make a significant difference in understanding their feelings and needs. I continue to learn Bella’s unique language daily, adapting to her ways and celebrating every step she makes towards independence and self-expression. As a parent embracing autism acceptance, it's crucial to share these experiences to raise awareness and inspire others facing similar challenges. Each moment, no matter how small it seems, can be a beautiful demonstration of love and understanding between parent and child.
