How to Know Which Friends to Cut Off in 2026
I talk about how to identify which friends you should cut out of your life by testing them with a serious business opportunity. I explain that if your friends won't support your entrepreneurial ideas but will engage in reckless behavior, it's time to let them go.

It's 2026, and like many of you, I believe it's time to start fresh, especially when it comes to our inner circle. We often talk about #FriendshipGoals, but sometimes, achieving those goals means letting go of relationships that no longer serve us. My own journey recently led me to a crucial realization: identifying who to keep and who to cut off is essential for personal and entrepreneurial growth. My go-to method for discerning true support has become what I call the 'Business Opportunity Test.' It’s simple yet incredibly revealing. I bring a serious business idea to my friends, something with real potential, something that could make a lot of money. I let them know that I’m serious about it and genuinely want them to be involved. This isn't just about finding business partners; it's a litmus test for their true intentions and how much they genuinely want to see you better yourself and, indeed, better y'all as a whole. Here’s why this test is so effective: If they say no, or worse, dismiss your entrepreneurial ideas without genuine interest or offer of support, it’s a huge red flag. Why? Because these are often the same individuals who’d enthusiastically participate in reckless behavior, perhaps putting a Don Julio bottle on top of their head at a party or knocking over liquor sections, ending up barefoot on the ground with no shoes and socks. Yet, when it comes to an idea that could elevate everyone, that requires serious commitment and vision, suddenly their enthusiasm wanes. This contrast speaks volumes about their priorities and their actual investment in your success and well-being. Beyond the business test, there are other subtle signs that might indicate it's time to re-evaluate a friendship. Do they consistently offer negative comments about your ambitions? Do they celebrate your successes with genuine joy, or does a hint of jealousy creep in? Are they always needing your help but rarely offering theirs? These energy-draining dynamics can chip away at your motivation and self-worth. In 2026, we need people who uplift us, challenge us positively, and celebrate our wins as if they were their own. Cutting off a friend isn’t easy, and it certainly doesn't always have to be a dramatic confrontation. Sometimes, it’s a gradual fading, a conscious decision to invest less energy into relationships that don't reciprocate. Other times, it might involve setting clear boundaries. Remember, this decision is about protecting your peace, your vision, and your future. It's about making space for the right people — those who will be serious about your growth and involved in your journey towards success. Don't be afraid to make those tough calls because, in the end, your personal and professional growth depends on the company you keep.
