... Read moreAs someone who was initially hesitant about scheduling a colonoscopy, I can share how important this screening is based on my personal experience. I used to think, "I feel fine, I don't need a colonoscopy!" but that mindset can be risky given the rise in colon cancer cases, even among people under 50. March being National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month is a great reminder to prioritize your health. Doctors recommend starting colon cancer screenings at age 45 for average-risk individuals, but if you notice any warning signs like blood in your stool, persistent changes in bowel habits, thinner stools, or unexplained fatigue, it’s wise to get screened earlier. These symptoms may seem minor but could be early red flags. It’s easy to dismiss blood in the stool as hemorrhoids, but don't assume it’s harmless, especially if the bleeding continues or you experience other symptoms. The colonoscopy procedure itself was straightforward for me, and despite some initial anxiety, knowing that it could save my life made it totally worthwhile. In addition to colonoscopy, other screening methods like fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) or virtual colonoscopies exist, but colonoscopy is unique in allowing immediate removal of polyps before they can develop into cancer. This preventive capability is what makes the procedure so invaluable. Ultimately, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and family history is key. Scheduling a colonoscopy or appropriate screening might feel intimidating, but catching colon cancer early greatly improves treatment outcomes. If you’re due for screening or have questions about symptoms, don’t hesitate to see your doctor. Your health is worth it.
