Writing Tips - Types of Deaths Pt. 1 ✍️📖

2025/2/24 Edited to

... Read moreAs a writer, I've always been fascinated by the darker side of human experience, especially when crafting characters who face profound internal struggles. Diving into 'the fall' – those dark psychological scenes where a character truly breaks – feels incredibly impactful. It's not just about a physical end; sometimes, the most devastating 'deaths' happen within the mind and heart. Let me share what I've learned about writing these intense moments. When I think about an 'emotional death,' I picture the end of a character's emotional journey as they know it. It’s when hope dies, or love withers, leaving a hollow shell. I try to explore how this manifests: maybe they become numb, unable to connect, or lose their capacity for joy. Their reactions to others change drastically, and it’s important to show, rather than tell, this shift. For instance, a character who once found solace in nature might now see only desolation. The setting and tone I choose become crucial here; a bleak, isolating environment can mirror their internal state, making the reader feel their emotional collapse. Then there’s 'psychological death' – this is where a character's mental or emotional stability completely shatters. It's the moment their sense of self unravels, and their inner world becomes a battlefield. I find this type of scene incredibly powerful because it delves into the character's distorted perceptions and internal chaos. I often use inner dialogue to great effect here, letting the reader hear their fractured thoughts, their descent into paranoia, or their struggle to grasp reality. How do others react to this? Do their loved ones see the change, or are they oblivious? The impact on their relationships and their own identity is immense. I focus on showing the process of this breakdown, not just the aftermath, building up the tension through small clues and escalating internal conflict. It’s about portraying the 'powerful impact on a character's sense of self' as they lose their grip. To truly make these dark psychological scenes resonate, I've found a few things helpful. First, build the groundwork. These aren't sudden events; they're usually the culmination of stress, trauma, or a series of devastating choices. Use subtext and subtle shifts in behavior before the full 'fall.' Second, don't shy away from the gritty details of their inner turmoil. Whether it’s through vivid descriptions of their physical manifestations of distress or through their internal monologues, let the reader experience the breakdown with them. Third, consider the aftermath. What are the consequences of such a profound internal collapse? How does it change the character, and how does it affect the narrative moving forward? It’s about making the reader understand the weight of such an event. Remember, the goal is to make the reader feel the 'fall' – the end of their mental stability or emotional capacity – deeply, leaving a lasting impression long after they've finished reading.
