What They Don’t Teach You in Nursing School 💉
Nursing school for sure taught me how to pass meds, chart like a pro, and recite the five rights in my sleep. But they definitely didn’t teach me how to survive a 12-hour shift with one bathroom break and different sources of caffeine to keep me awake during the night.
No one mentioned how creative I’d get with my 2am snacks, or how I’d master the art of smiling while internally spiraling lol.
Honestly, nursing school prepped me for the job - just not the chaos. If you know, you know. 😅 Drop your most “they didn’t teach me THIS” moment below ⬇️

Nursing is a demanding profession, and while nursing school equips you with clinical skills, it often overlooks practical aspects of day-to-day life as a nurse. New nurses face challenges like managing time efficiently, handling emotional stress, and maintaining self-care during exhausting shifts. Coping with fatigue is crucial; many nurses rely on strategies such as strategic caffeination, healthy snacks, and small breaks to rejuvenate. Additionally, building a support network of fellow nurses can provide emotional resilience, as sharing experiences and advice helps ease the burden. Establishing boundaries and practicing mindfulness can also improve mental health and prevent burnout. Real-life nursing experiences can be vastly different from what is taught in school. Skills such as multitasking, dealing with difficult patients, and making quick decisions under pressure are vital. Engaging in continuing education and seeking mentorship can further bridge the gap between theory and practice. Join the conversation!
