Author’s Purpose and Percival Everett’s “James”

Understanding an author’s purpose is essential—especially when we’re reading books with Black or BIPOC characters. In this video, I break down why that matters and use Percival Everett’s James as a powerful example.

Everett reimagines Jim from Huckleberry Finn not as a caricature, but as a brilliant, strategic, fully human Black man navigating a world built on white comfort. When we consider the author’s purpose, we can see how he challenges stereotypes, reframes the narrative, and reclaims space for Black interiority on the page.

If you’re passionate about books, representation, or reading critically, this one’s for you.

✨ Let’s read with intention.

✨ Let’s honor the craft, the culture, and the characters.#books #authorspurpose #readingislit
