Frenchie want some Ice cream
Oh my goodness, can any other dog parents relate to the sheer struggle when that ice cream truck music starts playing? My Frenchie, bless his little heart, turns into a completely different dog! It's like he suddenly forgets all his training when he hears that jingle. The image of 'trying to lose weight, but hearing the ice cream truck coming' perfectly describes his internal battle, and honestly, mine too when I'm trying to stick to a diet! It's so hard to resist those big, pleading Frenchie eyes, especially when he's doing his little 'ice cream dance.' But as much as I want to spoil him, I've learned that regular human ice cream isn't always the best for our furry friends. Most commercial ice creams contain dairy, which can upset a dog's stomach, and loads of sugar, which isn't good for their weight or overall health. And the absolute biggest no-no is xylitol, an artificial sweetener that's highly toxic to dogs – always check your labels! So, what's a loving Frenchie parent to do when their pup has serious ice cream cravings? I've found some fantastic alternatives that let my little guy enjoy a cool treat without any of the worries. My go-to is making homemade 'nice cream' for dogs. All you need is a ripe banana, a spoonful of natural, unsweetened peanut butter (xylitol-free!), and a bit of plain yogurt or water. Blend it up, freeze it in small portions (like a Kong or an ice cube tray), and voilà! A healthy, delicious, and safe ice cream alternative. He absolutely goes wild for it! Another great option is simply frozen fruit. My Frenchie loves small pieces of frozen blueberries, strawberries, or sliced banana. They're refreshing, packed with vitamins, and perfectly safe. Just be sure to avoid fruits like grapes, which are toxic to dogs. Sometimes, when the ice cream truck is just TOO tempting, I try to distract him with a fun game or a new chew toy. It doesn't always work, especially if he's already locked onto that familiar tune, but it helps! Managing a Frenchie's weight, especially with their predisposition to certain health issues, is super important. So, while I love to treat him, it’s all about moderation and choosing the right kinds of treats. It's truly heartwarming to see how much joy a simple frozen treat can bring to their day. Just remember to always prioritize their health and safety. What are your Frenchie's favorite cool treats? I'm always looking for new ideas to keep my little ice cream enthusiast happy and healthy!
