I’m hoping that no matter the outcome, people conduct themselves like rational humans. I may be asking for a lot here though!

... Read moreAs October approaches, many of us are reflecting on past political protests in Alberta and wondering what could happen this time around. The concerns about separatists potentially storming the Legislature or another convoy-style protest reoccurring highlight ongoing political tensions that have been simmering in recent years. From personal experience, being in Alberta during previous protests, such as the 2022 Freedom Convoy, I witnessed mixed reactions—while some participants were passionate, the overall community impact depended largely on how people chose to conduct themselves. It’s important to remember the role that law enforcement, like the RCMP, plays in maintaining order. Preparing for possible unrest doesn’t mean expecting chaos but anticipating challenges so they can be managed without heavy-handed responses or escalation. I have noticed that calm, rational dialogue often helps prevent misunderstandings from turning into confrontations. If another demonstration occurs, supporting peaceful conduct means encouraging respectful communication, staying informed through reliable sources, and avoiding provocations. Sometimes online conversations can inflame anger more than real-life discussions, so focusing on empathy and recognizing diverse perspectives can ease tensions. Ultimately, whether you agree or disagree with the causes behind any protest, prioritizing safety and respect ensures that communities don’t suffer unnecessarily. Vigilance paired with reason helps protect democratic expressions while discouraging violence or disorder. We all have a part to play in creating an environment where opinions can be voiced constructively—hopefully, this October will show that Alberta’s strength lies in its citizens’ ability to remain rational, even amid difficult political moments.
