Side stretching
Gate Pose 👍Pros : Improve flexibility, stimulate organs and increase your balance.
Head-to-Knee 👍Pros : Stretches the hamstrings, groin and shoulders while also strengthening the back muscles.
Hey everyone! I’ve been on a fantastic journey exploring different stretches to really boost my flexibility and overall well-being, and I wanted to share some of my absolute favorites that have made a huge difference for me. You know how important it is to keep our bodies moving and supple, right? Especially with all the sitting we do these days! One stretch I absolutely swear by for hip relief is the Figure Four Stretch. If you've ever felt that deep tension in your glutes or lower back, this one is a game-changer! I first discovered it when I was trying to ease some hip discomfort, and it quickly became a staple in my routine. You can do it seated, which is great if you’re at your desk, or my personal favorite, lying on your back (the supine version). To do the supine Figure Four, lie down with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Then, cross one ankle over the opposite knee, forming a "figure four" shape with your legs. Gently pull the bottom thigh towards your chest. Oh my goodness, the relief you feel as that outer hip and glute muscle lengthens is just incredible! I always make sure to breathe deeply into the stretch, holding it for at least 30 seconds on each side. It’s amazing for opening up tight hips and can even help with sciatica pain. Seriously, give the 'figure four leg cross' a try – your hips will thank you! Another gem in my stretching toolkit is the Gate Pose, or Parighasana. This one is fantastic for lengthening your entire side body, from your fingertips all the way down to your outer ankle. I used to think side stretches were just for aesthetics, but I’ve learned they do so much more! My balance has improved noticeably since incorporating Gate Pose, and I feel like it really helps to 'wake up' my internal organs, just as the original article mentioned. To practice it, you kneel on your mat, extend one leg out to the side with your foot flat, and then reach the arm on the same side down your extended leg. The opposite arm reaches overhead, creating this beautiful, long arc. It feels so expansive! Sometimes, I even do gentle 'gate rocks exercise' within the pose, swaying slightly forward and back to explore different angles of the stretch. It’s a wonderful way to improve flexibility in your obliques and intercostal muscles, which can get really stiff. Pairing stretches like the Figure Four and Gate Pose has been brilliant for targeting different areas of my body and creating a more holistic sense of flexibility. I often do the Figure Four first to release hip tension, and then move into Gate Pose to lengthen my sides. It feels like a complete reset for my body. Remember, consistency is key! I try to dedicate at least 10-15 minutes a day to stretching, even if it’s just a few poses. Always listen to your body – never force a stretch, and only go as deep as feels comfortable. Deep, slow breathing really enhances the experience, helping your muscles relax and allowing you to sink deeper into the pose safely. These stretches aren’t just about physical benefits; they’re also a fantastic way to check in with myself and find a moment of calm in my busy day. Give them a try and let me know how you feel!
