Repotting my VFT

Beginner-Friendly Guide for Carnivorous Plant Care 🌿🪰

If you’ve ever brought home a Venus Flytrap from a big box store and it came in one of those little plastic domes (aka death cubes 😬), this post is for you. These plants need special care to survive and thrive! Here’s how I repotted mine using the right tools and a little love 🧤

✨ What you’ll need:

✔️VFT [$7.98 each at Home Depot]

✔️ Carnivorous plant soil (Sphagnum peat moss & perlite..NO fertilizer!) [$12.99 for 2 qts on Amazon]

✔️ Distilled or rain water only (tap water WILL kill them 🫣) [$1.50 at Kroger]

✔️ A pot with tons of drainage [2 for $12.99 on Amazo]

✔️ Gloves, pruners, & patience 💅 [$1.25 each a Dollar Tree, except for that last one. not in stock]

🪴 Step 1: Remove your plant from the death cube. These traps need airflow and space, humidity domes can cause mold. Eek. Not in this house.

🌱 Step 2: Gently shake off the soil from the roots. Most store-bought flytraps are packed in peat or moss that’s compacted and choking them out.

💧 Step 3: Rinse the root system with distilled water only; never use tap, bottled, or mineral water. The minerals and additives can damage their delicate roots.

🌿 Step 4: Prune dead bits off. Healthy roots should be dark and wire-like, not pale or mushy. Repot into a container with carnivorous plant soil and good drainage. Keep the roots snug but not compressed, then water with more distilled water to help it settle in and fill out airspaces in soil. This is very important!

🧪 Tip: These plants like bright indirect light and should sit in a shallow tray of distilled water to stay moist..just make sure not to flood the crown!

... Read moreRepotting a Venus Flytrap (VFT) is essential for its long-term survival and growth, especially when rescued from less-than-ideal store conditions like the infamous 'death cubes.' To ensure your VFT thrives, understanding the proper soil composition and watering techniques is critical. Carnivorous plant soil is a unique mix of sphagnum peat moss and perlite, carefully chosen because it is nutrient-poor and well-draining—fertilizer must be avoided as it can harm the plant. Using only distilled or rainwater is crucial since tap water contains minerals and chemicals that can accumulate in the soil and damage the plant’s sensitive root system. Likewise, selecting a pot with excellent drainage prevents waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. When repotting, gently remove the plant from its container and carefully loosen or shake off any compacted old soil. Compact soil can suffocate the roots and encourage mold growth. Examine the roots and prune away any dead or mushy parts, ensuring the healthy roots remain dark and firm. This step helps prevent disease and promotes healthy root development. After placing the VFT into fresh carnivorous soil, make sure the roots are snug but not compressed to allow airflow within the soil. Water thoroughly with distilled water to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. These plants thrive in bright, indirect sunlight and benefit from sitting in a shallow tray of distilled water to maintain consistent moisture levels. However, avoid flooding the crown of the plant, as excess moisture there can cause rot. Lastly, consistent monitoring and gentle care help your Venus Flytrap adjust to its new home. Repotting not only rejuvenates the soil and root system but also creates a better microenvironment that encourages healthy traps and vigorous growth. Following these tips supports a long, thriving life for your captivating carnivorous companion.
