Doom Piles

Vulnerable Moment:

So before I was officially diagnosed with ADHD, I would have mini piles of papers and other things I just couldn’t get sorted quick enough. Once I’m did a deep dive and found out what doom piles were I was like “that’s me!”. It made me feel so much relief to know it wasn’t because I didn’t have a system or that I didn’t care about my space it was because I have a hard time getting my stuff organized with the impact on my executive function. So if y’all are experiencing this you are not alone. Now let me get to cleaning, again!

2025/1/11 Edited to

... Read moreIt’s so validating to hear others talk about ‘doom piles’ because for years, I just thought I was inherently messy or disorganized. Before my ADHD diagnosis, I'd look at things like that stack of mail growing by the door, or the random collection of clothes on my ottoman – just like the ones I've seen in photos with snowflake patterns or even a gaming console box mixed with papers – and feel this overwhelming sense of failure. It wasn't just a pile; it was a testament to all the things I intended to do but couldn't quite get to. So, what exactly are these infamous 'doom piles' we keep talking about? For me, and many others with ADHD, they're not just typical clutter. They're collections of items that have been left undone because of challenges with executive functions – things like initiation, task management, organization, and even emotional regulation. That single shoe left out, the orange bag near the wall outlet, or the colorful educational paper mixed with folded jeans on the bed – each item represents a decision deferred, a task incomplete. It’s like my brain gets stuck in a loop: "I need to do this," "I'll do it later," "Where do I even start?", until it becomes a formidable mountain of 'should-dos.' Understanding this was a massive breakthrough. It wasn't that I didn’t care about my space or that I lacked a system; it was literally how my brain processed and prioritized tasks. The sheer mental energy required to sort through that mail, put away those clothes, or find a home for every single item felt insurmountable. Each item in a 'doom pile' often has multiple steps associated with it – opening the mail, deciding if it’s important, filing it, shredding it, or responding to it. For an ADHD brain, these multi-step processes can be a huge barrier. I’ve started to learn little ways to tackle my 'doom piles,' even if it’s just one small step at a time. For instance, I now have a designated 'landing spot' for new mail that’s not a pile. It’s a single tray, and when it's full, I have to deal with it. For clothes, I try to follow the "if it touches the floor, it's dirty" rule, which helps prevent the chair-robe from becoming a mountain. I also found that breaking down tasks into tiny, almost ridiculous steps helps. Instead of "clean the living room," it's "pick up five things from the doom pile." Sometimes, just having a designated "put away" basket that I cycle through once a week helps manage those random items like the gaming controllers or a lone shoe that ends up out of place. The most important thing I've learned is self-compassion. It's okay if my space isn't always picture-perfect. What matters is that I understand why these piles form and that I’m working with my brain, not against it. If you're experiencing 'doom piling' or have what feels like 'ADHD piles of stuff,' please know you're not alone. It's a common experience for many of us, and recognizing it is the first step towards managing it with kindness and understanding for ourselves.

I have never officially been diagnosed with ADHD, but all signs point to yes for me, and this does even more! I have never heard of doom piles, but I have many in my house (my closet has been a good place for them)! Thank you for validating that I am not alone!!!

what adhd ACTUALLY looks like 💛
when you hear the word “adhd” what do you see? probably a little boy with tons of energy, unfocused, acting up in class. in reality, adhd usually looks a LOT different. and one of the reasons i went so long without knowing i had it was because of the images i’d been shown of what adhd looks like
