Dermal cleaning
So you've decided to get a dermal piercing, or maybe you've had one for a while and just want to ensure you're giving it the best care possible! I totally get it – keeping a dermal clean and happy is crucial for a smooth healing process and to prevent any complications. Based on my own experience, I've learned a few things that really make a difference, especially when it comes to the daily cleaning routine. First things first, saline solution is your best friend. This isn't just a suggestion; it's a non-negotiable for proper dermal piercing aftercare. You can buy pre-made sterile saline wound wash (make sure it's just 0.9% sodium chloride and water, no additives!), or if you're in a pinch, you can make your own by dissolving 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in one cup of warm distilled water. However, I always recommend the pre-made sterile spray for convenience and guaranteed sterility. When it's time to clean, I usually do this twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed. Gently spray the saline solution directly onto your dermal piercing, making sure to saturate the area. You don't need to twist or move the jewelry; just let the solution do its work. It helps to loosen any crusties that might have formed. After letting it sit for a minute or two, you can gently pat around the piercing with a clean, non-woven gauze or paper towel. The key here is to dry around, never go under the jewelry itself. You want to avoid leaving any moisture trapped directly beneath the dermal top, as this can create a breeding ground for bacteria. Air drying is also a great option if you have the time! Beyond the cleaning, proper aftercare is vital. Try your best to avoid touching your piercing with unwashed hands. This is probably the hardest rule to follow, but it's so important! Also, be mindful of clothing, hair, or anything that might snag or irritate your dermal. I've learned the hard way that a little bump can set back healing significantly. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you might notice some redness or even a bit of bruising around your dermal, especially in the initial days or if it gets accidentally knocked (we've all been there!). If you find yourself thinking, “oh no, ice this nasty a bruise,” then you're on the right track. Applying a cold compress (like an ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth) for 10-15 minutes a few times a day can really help reduce swelling and discomfort. But remember, this is for temporary relief; consistent cleaning is still the foundation. Finally, listen to your body. If you notice persistent redness, excessive pain, yellow or green discharge, or a fever, it's always best to consult with your piercer or a healthcare professional. They can offer personalized advice and ensure your dermal piercing heals beautifully. Happy healing!
