... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? That little voice in your head, maybe even a big, booming one, that screams, "I DON'T WANNA GO UP THERE!" For me, it often happens when I'm faced with a dark staircase late at night, or perhaps just a quiet, empty house where every creak sounds like a monster. It's like my brain instantly conjures up a "bear under the stairs" – an imaginary threat that sends my survival instincts into overdrive, even when logically, I know it's just my imagination playing tricks. I've been there so many times. The stairs to my attic, for example, can feel like a climb into another dimension when the lights are off. My heart starts to race, and every shadow looks suspicious. It’s funny how our minds can create such vivid scenarios from nothing but a little bit of darkness and silence. But what I've learned is that while those survival instincts are strong, we also have this amazing "content brain" – the part of us that knows there's something to gain by pushing through, whether it's reaching a goal, finding something fun, or just proving to yourself that you're braver than you think. So, how do I tackle these moments when my inner self just wants to freeze? It starts with acknowledging the fear. It's okay to feel a little spooked! But then, I try to talk myself through it. I’ll literally say to myself, "Okay, what's actually going to happen?" Usually, the answer is nothing remotely dangerous. Then, it's about taking that first step. Just one. Sometimes, I even channel a little cheerleading energy, telling myself, "LET'S GO COME ON CHEERIO!" It sounds silly, but positive self-talk can be incredibly powerful in silencing that inner doubter. Another trick I use is distraction. If I'm really struggling, I'll put on a favorite song, listen to a podcast, or even just focus on counting the steps. It shifts my brain’s attention from the imagined "bear" to something tangible and less threatening. And once I'm up there, the feeling of accomplishment, even over something so small, is genuinely uplifting. It reinforces the idea that those fears are usually just in our heads, and we have the power to overcome them. This isn't just about stairs, either. It’s about facing any small reluctance or apprehension in our daily lives. Whether it's starting a new project, making that phone call you’ve been putting off, or trying a new skill, the same principles apply. Acknowledge the fear, take a deep breath, and take that first small step forward. You might be surprised at how quickly the imaginary "bear" disappears once you shine a little light on it. It’s all part of the beautiful, messy chaos of life, and finding the courage to move forward makes it so much richer. Follow for more chaos – and more tips on conquering those everyday fears!

Living in survival mode isn’t living. It’s reacting. It’s protecting. It’s doing what you have to do, emotionally, physically, mentally, just to make it through the day. Sometimes it looks like high-functioning. Other times it looks like disappearing, but either way, it’s exhausting. If this
