Day 1 Makeup from Different Years💙
90s Edition
(I know they didn’t put lashes but I wasn’t feeling the the look without them )
Exploring makeup through the decades is like taking a trip back in time, each era telling a unique story through its beauty trends. From the glamorous Hollywood waves of the 40s to the rebellious punk rock looks of the 80s, makeup styles have always mirrored societal shifts, fashion, and cultural icons. It's truly fascinating to see how techniques and products evolved, giving us a glimpse into the past while inspiring today’s looks. When I decided to kick off my "Makeup Through The Decades" series, the 90s felt like the perfect starting point. It’s an era that’s constantly referenced in fashion and beauty today, and for good reason! The 90s brought us some truly unforgettable, and sometimes questionable, trends. Recreating this look was a nostalgic challenge, but also a fantastic way to understand the aesthetics of the time. One of the most defining features I focused on were the thin eyebrows. Today, we're all about fluffy, full brows, so going for that pencil-thin arch really changed my whole face! While I wouldn't recommend over-plucking your natural brows, you can achieve a similar effect by concealing the top and bottom edges or using a fine brow pencil to draw in a thinner shape. Then there was the eyeshadow. The 90s loved its electric eyeshadows, especially blues, purples, and frosty silvers. My look incorporated a vibrant shade that instantly transported me back. To make this wearable now, you could opt for a more muted version or keep the rest of your face neutral. Applying white for the waterline was another iconic trick to make the eyes appear wider and brighter, a subtle yet effective touch. And who could forget clumpy mascara? It wasn't about perfectly separated lashes back then; a slightly spidery, thick lash was part of the charm. For the base, it was all about that SUPER MATTE finish. Gone were the dewy looks of the 80s; the 90s embraced a flawless, almost flat complexion. This can sometimes make you look a bit "baddie ghost," as I experienced, but it’s definitely a distinct look! Achieving this involves a good mattifying primer, a full-coverage matte foundation, and plenty of powder to set everything in place. And of course, no 90s look is complete without the lips. The trend of dark lip liner paired with a slightly lighter or nude lipstick was everywhere. It gave a defined, almost graphic outline to the lips. Some looks even featured just the liner with a clear gloss! While I did add lashes to my recreation – because let's be real, a little extra drama never hurts, even if it wasn't always a 90s staple – it highlights how we adapt past trends to fit our modern preferences. This Day 1 recreation of the 90s makeup was an incredible learning experience. It showed me how much makeup trends can transform a face and how fun it is to step out of your comfort zone. Stay tuned as I continue my journey through the fascinating world of makeup history, diving into more iconic looks from different decades!
