... Read moreI know how incredibly frustrating it can feel to step on the scale after a week of dedicated effort and see a smaller number than you hoped for, like my 1.5 lb loss this week. Especially when you've also experienced weeks where the scale dropped significantly more, sometimes even by 12.8 lbs! It's so easy to get caught up in comparing current progress to past rapid losses, or even to others' journeys. But what I've learned on my own path, especially after my gastric sleeve surgery, is that every single loss, big or small, is a victory worth celebrating. Many of us, especially those on a structured weight loss journey, tend to expect continuous, dramatic drops. However, healthy, sustainable weight loss, particularly after the initial rapid phase post-surgery, often averages around 1-2 pounds a week. So, seeing a 1.5 lb loss is actually perfectly on track for steady, consistent progress. It means your body is adapting, and you're making choices that are leading to long-term success. Don't let the scale define your success entirely by a single weekly number. What I've truly come to realize is that weekly weigh-ins are just one piece of a much larger and more complex puzzle. Our bodies are incredible, intricate machines, and things like water retention, muscle gain (which weighs more than fat!), hormonal fluctuations, or even just what you ate the day before can affect that number on the scale. My own weigh-ins over the past seven weeks have shown significant variation, with losses ranging from 1.5 lbs to 12.8 lbs. This fluctuation is completely normal and expected! Instead of fixating on the exact number, I try to focus on how my clothes fit, my energy levels throughout the day, and how much stronger I feel during my workouts. These 'non-scale victories' are just as, if not more, important indicators of genuine progress and improved health. For anyone on a similar journey – whether it's through bariatric surgery, a specific diet plan, or just a general lifestyle change – remember that consistency truly is the key. There will inevitably be weeks of amazing progress, and then there will be weeks where it feels like you're barely moving forward. My journey started with a starting weight of 285 lbs on surgery day, and now I'm at 250.4 lbs, with a total loss of 34.5 lbs by Week 7. This significant achievement wasn't built on expecting huge drops every single time. It was built on showing up every single day, making healthy choices, and trusting the process even when the scale didn't immediately reflect my efforts. If you find yourself discouraged by a 1.5 lb loss, take a moment to really celebrate it! It means you're still moving in the right direction, burning fat, and making positive changes for your health. This truly is a marathon, not a sprint, and every single step counts towards that finish line.
