what made you realize you had a fake friend?

my friendships

for me i’ve always been able to tell when someone genuinely dislikes me or uses me. so many times i have clinged to friendship that not only hurt me but affected how i was to everyone else. i’m hoping we can share our experiences and embrace vulnerability.

red flags to look out for (from what i’ve seen) :

1. they will love bomb the heck out of you no matter what. it has happened so many times where i am loved and we have just a great week and the next they are screaming at my face or ignoring me for someone else

2. they will put your happiness down. when you accomplish something good or a goal you’ve been working on; their reaction should be nothing put positivity. no one deserves to be treated like their work doesn’t deserve praise. this is a huge indicator they may be insecure or just down right a b-word. friends are meant to hype each other up and be happy when the other is experiencing goodness in their life.

3. they will disregard your feelings and show no respect to you. if you ask someone to stop acting a certain way then they should respect that. but if they don’t then they aren’t good company. my friend told me that every time she set boundaries her other friend breaks them. but when they set boundaries my friend obeys. this is a sign of a toxic friendship that isn’t good for either of them. everyone deserves respect and love no matter what!

what a good friendship should be: your friends should be kind. no matter what, even if you come to disagreements or arguments you both deserve mercy and kindness. friends should stick together and not leave you out. you should be excited to see them everyday and not just every once in a while. you deserve love and are so worthy of it. you deserve a friend(s) that will be there and support you. no one should ever deal with people who hurt you. you deserve so much more and youre so much better than that! love yourself

(sorry i kinda went on a rant. this is just my opinion. i don’t want anyone to feel offended or hurt by this! this is how i’ve seen things for a while and i hope some of it is useful to you!)

... Read moreIt's a tough pill to swallow when you realize a friend you trusted deeply might actually be manipulative or fake. I've been there, navigating several friendships that left me feeling drained and questioning myself, just like the image mentions. Beyond the obvious red flags, there are often subtle signs that slowly erode your self-worth and peace of mind. One thing I learned was to pay close attention to how I felt after spending time with someone. Did I feel uplifted, or did I feel exhausted, confused, or even guilty? Manipulative friends often leave you feeling this way. They might employ tactics like gaslighting, making you doubt your own memories or feelings. For example, you might bring up something that upset you, and they'll respond with, 'That never happened,' or 'You're being too sensitive,' leaving you to wonder if you imagined it. This constant questioning of your reality is a huge red flag. Another sign I've personally encountered is the 'victim card.' A manipulative friend might always be the one suffering, demanding your emotional support but rarely offering theirs in return. Every conversation somehow circles back to their problems, and any attempt to share your own struggles is met with a swift return to their narrative. It creates a one-sided dynamic where your needs are consistently ignored. Similarly, pay attention to conditional support – they're only there for you when it serves their purpose or makes them look good. True friendship is unconditional. Sometimes, these 'friends' will also try to isolate you. They might subtly badmouth your other friends, make you feel guilty for spending time with others, or even create drama to pull you away from your support system. This can leave you feeling alone and more dependent on them, which is exactly what a manipulator wants. I remember feeling like I had to choose sides, which is never a good sign in a healthy friendship. Realizing you're in a manipulative or fake friendship is often the hardest part. Once you see these patterns, the next step is crucial: protecting yourself. This doesn't always mean a dramatic confrontation. Sometimes, it means slowly distancing yourself, setting firmer boundaries, and reducing your emotional investment. It could be saying 'no' more often, not engaging in their drama, or simply limiting how much personal information you share. Remember, your peace is paramount. You deserve friends who celebrate your successes, respect your boundaries, and genuinely care about your well-being, not just what they can get from you. It's a journey, but recognizing these signs is the first step towards building a circle of truly supportive and authentic connections.

I came home tired tonight. 💛 Like genuinely, sit-down-and-stare-at-nothing kind of tired. The kind where you don’t even know what you want to eat or what to watch or where to start. And somewhere in that quiet I just started noticing things. ✨ The fact that I had somewhere to come home to.
