A lot can change in a year
A lot can change in a year when you stop seeing yourself as “just an employee” and start building real skills.
I didn’t jump industries.
I didn’t get lucky.
Reflecting on a year of personal transformation, I realized that the biggest change comes not from shifting industries or waiting for luck but from actively building skills and staying open to new opportunities. Working security in the same building for a year, I watched others progress and knew I needed to elevate my own value. Instead of complaining about my position, I chose to learn a new trade, eventually moving into building the suites within the same structure I once guarded. This experience taught me that your environment might stay the same, but by investing in yourself, your value and leverage in the workplace can dramatically increase. The key was consistent learning and maintaining a growth mindset. Small daily actions, like seeking out training, networking with those in new roles, and embracing challenges outside my comfort zone, led to significant career progress. If you’re feeling stuck, remember that it's not the job title or company that defines your potential. By focusing on skill development—whether technical skills or soft skills like communication and problem-solving—you can transform your career path. Start by identifying key skills that can open doors in your current industry, then commit to deliberate practice and learning. Over time, you will gain the confidence and capabilities needed to move up within your field without jumping industries or relying on luck.
