Cleaning Your Closet with a Chronic Illness

I clean out my closet twice a year: when I bring out my fall/winter clothes and when I bring out my spring/summer clothes ..but I have to take extra precautions and I honestly hate it 🙄

I have pretty severe allergies to dust and I also have a condition called urticaria (chronic hives) so my skin is super sensitive. Despite my best cleaning efforts the dust from my closet can irritate my allergies so bad it’ll cause my fibromyalgia to flare up. So I wear an old bonnet to keep the dust off my hair, a mask to keep from breathing in too much dust, and sometimes even gloves so I won’t get hives on my hands. Before I started doing this my allergies got so bad it triggered a flare that lasted almost 3 weeks and left me bedridden 🙃 honestly I hate that I have to take so many precautions just to do a simple task but I feel like I’ve perfected my process ..

🧺 see what I wore/didn’t wear this season

🧺 take away all my bulky sweaters I won’t be wearing for the next 6 months

🧺 give my closet another once over because I always forget how hot it actually is in the summer

🧺 sort clothes into selling on Poshmark and garbage (mainly pajamas, workout clothes, etc)

🧺 break out the lighter layers and see if anything needs getting rid of

🧺 pack away the sweaters 💔

🧺 organize everything by color and sleeve length until the fall 😃

... Read moreIt's so true, trying to do a big 'house clean out,' especially when it involves something as personal as our clothes, can feel like climbing a mountain with a chronic illness. My twice-yearly closet swapout is a prime example! Bridget's experience with allergies and fibromyalgia during her seasonal closet clear-out really resonated with me. Beyond just the immediate clean-up, I've found a few extra strategies that have really helped me manage my 'chronic clothes' situation and make these tasks less daunting. First, Breaking Down the Beast. Instead of viewing it as one giant 'house clean out,' I've learned to tackle my clothes in smaller, more manageable chunks. Maybe one day I just focus on taking all my winter clothes out. The next day, I might only sort through those winter clothes for what to keep, sell, or donate. The day after, I might just bring out the summer clothes. This prevents me from getting totally overwhelmed and hitting that energy wall where a flare-up feels inevitable. Remember, it's okay if it takes a week to do what others might do in a day! Next, Smart Storage is a Lifesaver. Bridget mentioned bulky sweaters taking up so much space, which is so relatable! For those of us with chronic conditions, easy access and minimal dust are key. I swear by clear, airtight storage bins for off-season clothes. They keep dust and allergens away, and I can see what's inside without having to rummage and expend extra energy. Vacuum-seal bags are also fantastic for saving space with those 'winter clothes taken out' that are destined for storage. When it's time for the 'summer clothes to be brought out,' they're clean and ready. Making Decisions Easier on Exhausted Brains. Decision fatigue is real when you live with chronic illness. When sorting through clothes for sale or trash, I try to have a few quick rules: The "Comfort First" Rule: If it's not comfortable, it's out. My body needs all the support it can get. The "One Year" Rule: Haven't worn it in a year (unless it's a special occasion item)? It probably needs to go. The "Does It Fit My Life Now?" Rule: Our bodies and lifestyles change with chronic illness. Clothes that used to work might not anymore. Be honest with yourself. This makes the 'clothes to sell trash' pile form much faster without endless agonizing. Finally, Everyday Maintenance for Less Stressful Swaps. To prevent the next 'closet swapout' from feeling like an Olympic sport, I try to do little bits of 'house clean out' throughout the season. If I try something on and hate it, into the donation bin it goes *immediately*. If a piece of clothing gets worn out, it's headed for the 'trash' pile right away. This consistent, gentle management of my 'chronic clothes' means less heavy lifting and fewer big decisions when the seasons change. It's about working with my body, not against it, to keep my wardrobe functional and my home peaceful. I hope these extra tips help you navigate your own seasonal clothing challenges!
