my second semester of nursing school classes✨

this is my schedule for the upcoming semester!! i’m most excited to learn more about different healthcare concepts and how to treat various treatments and populations. i actually really enjoyed med surg one so im excited for med surg two as well. but thinking about having clinicals twice a week is already making me tired lol. nonetheless, i’m excited to see what next semester brings and can’t wait to continue my journey towards becoming a registered nurse💘

... Read moreStepping into my second semester of nursing school has definitely been an eye-opener, and I wanted to share some deeper insights beyond just my class schedule. If you're wondering what '2nd semester nursing school' really looks like, let me tell you, it's a whole new level of learning and growth! One of the biggest shifts for me has been the intensity of Pharmacology. This isn't just memorizing drug names; it's understanding mechanisms, side effects, and patient teaching. My advice? Start a drug card system early – don't wait until crunch time. I found making my own flashcards with key info like mechanism of action, nursing considerations, and patient education points really helped. Also, utilize any practice questions your professor provides; they’re gold! Then there's Med Surg II, which builds on Med Surg I but dives into more complex systems and critical care concepts. It's a lot of information, and linking pathophysiology to nursing interventions is crucial. I've found that reviewing basic anatomy and physiology before each new unit makes a huge difference. Don't be afraid to utilize your textbooks' online resources or even YouTube for visual learners like me – sometimes seeing an animation of a disease process just clicks! Clinicals twice a week is no joke, and it definitely contributes to feeling "tired lol" as I mentioned in my post. It's exhilarating but also incredibly demanding. Preparation is key: always review your patient's chart the day before, understand their diagnoses, and know the medications you'll be administering. The medical simulation room experiences we had in our first semester were great for building confidence, but nothing truly prepares you for the live patient environment. On the actual clinical floor, ask questions, be proactive, and don't be afraid to jump in (within your scope, of course!). Remember to prioritize patient safety and always double-check your work. And seriously, invest in comfortable shoes – your feet will thank you! For Concepts Across the Lifespan, which includes Peds and Hospice, it's about shifting your mindset to different patient populations. Pediatric nursing requires a unique approach to assessment and communication, while hospice care really emphasizes comfort, dignity, and family support. These courses often highlight the humanistic side of nursing, which I find incredibly rewarding. Beyond the classes, managing your time and practicing self-care are absolutely vital. I learned quickly that cramming doesn't work. Instead, try to study a little bit every day, even if it's just reviewing notes for 30 minutes. Find a study group that genuinely helps you understand concepts, not just memorize. And please, remember to schedule breaks! Go for a walk, meet a friend for coffee, or just binge a show for an hour. Burnout is real, and taking care of your mental and physical health will make you a much better nurse in the long run. My journey is still ongoing, but these are the lessons I'm living by in my second semester. Wishing you all the best on your nursing school adventure!
