... Read moreReturning to the gym after being sick can be challenging, especially when you want to maintain progress but also need to be cautious about your health. From my own experience, the first day back is all about listening to your body and prioritizing form and lighter loads rather than pushing for heavy lifts. I started with some light cardio warm-up on the treadmill since the stairmaster wasn’t available this time. This helps get the blood flowing and gradually prepares the muscles for work. Then, I moved on to banded warm-ups which activate the smaller stabilizing muscles around the shoulders, an essential step that many overlook. When it came to the actual shoulder exercises, I kept the weights light—somewhere between 5 to 30 pounds—and focused on slow, controlled movements with sets ranging from 8 to 12 reps. This approach is crucial especially after being out of gym for a few days because it helps prevent injury and ensures that the targeted muscles are being engaged properly rather than compensating with surrounding muscle groups like the traps. One tip that really helped me maintain proper form was touching the muscle I’m working on during reps. This tactile feedback helps ensure that I’m activating the correct muscle groups and not relying on momentum or secondary muscles. Even though I recorded my workout awkwardly with my phone propped on my water bottle, reviewing the angles later helped me see where I could improve my form. Another key insight is to accept that your upper body workouts post-sickness might feel more like cardio, especially if you’re used to heavier lifting. This is normal, and patience is vital. Gradually, your strength and endurance will return. Lastly, it’s important not to rush back into heavy machines or crowded gym areas if they’re packed, as it can increase the risk of spreading germs or re-injury. Prioritize your health and stick to what you can do comfortably. Overall, ease into your training with a mindset of recovery and strengthening, and you’ll be back to your peak performance in no time. Remember, consistency and patience are your allies in the journey to wellness and bodybuilding success.
