time spent at work!

i decided to make a little chart of how much time i spend doing things at work, to see if im spending my time wisely or not!!

today i have a 6.5 hr shift, where i was assigned to breakfast and dinner let outs (pottying dogs & making their meals, cleaning their kennels, setting them up for the day/night, etc.) which those together are a combined 2.5 hrs long block. i also get a 30 min break, am assigned to a 30 min period of bathing a dog, and then have 3 training hours. i have 2 dogs guaranteed i have to work today, and then i picked two more to do a half hour block with for my last hour.

i always feel super lazy and unproductive at work, so i figured this would give a visual for me to realize how much time im actually doing work! :)

i also am autistic, so its very helpful for me to have several visual aids and little like lists and such to show what i have to do when. so on break i made this chart as well as a list of what i have to do with what dog at what time! i was gonna post those but idk if thats like interesting or not lol.

... Read moreHave you ever finished a workday feeling like you accomplished nothing, even though you were busy all day? I totally get that feeling! It’s easy to feel unproductive, especially when your tasks are varied, or you're constantly switching gears. That’s exactly why creating a visual representation of my 'Time At Work' was such a game-changer for me. Seeing it all laid out, like a colorful pie chart, really helps put things into perspective. For me, understanding how my time was truly spent as a dog trainer – from dedicated training sessions and walking dogs to specific tasks like bathing a dog, and even routine duties like 'breakfast' and 'dinner' let-outs – helped me acknowledge my efforts. It’s not just about the big, obvious tasks; it’s about recognizing every single moment you dedicate. Even a short 'break' is part of your work rhythm! If you're curious to try this for yourself, it’s surprisingly simple and incredibly rewarding. Here’s how you can create your own 'work time visual' and start feeling more in control and appreciative of your efforts: 1. List Everything You Do: Before you can visualize your time, you need to know what you're actually spending it on. For one typical workday, jot down every single task, big or small. Don't forget those quick checks of emails, short conversations, or even grabbing a coffee – they all add up! Think about your core responsibilities, like 'training' if you're a dog trainer, or 'client meetings' in an office job, but also the 'admin' or 'preparation' time. 2. Estimate Your Time: Once you have your list, try to estimate how much time each task typically takes. Be honest with yourself! Sometimes we underestimate how long routine tasks, like preparing for 'breakfast' or 'dinner' shifts, actually take. For activities that vary, like 'walking dogs' or 'bathing a dog', use an average or track it for a few days to get a better sense. 3. Choose Your Visual Method: This is where the fun begins! Pie Chart: Like the one I made, a pie chart is fantastic for showing proportions of your day. It instantly reveals which activities consume the largest chunks of your time. You can use free online tools, spreadsheet software, or even just draw one by hand. Bar Graph: If you want to compare time spent on different activities across different days, a bar graph can be very effective. Time Blocking: A simpler approach is to use a calendar or a planner to visually block out time for specific tasks. This isn't a retrospective chart but a proactive planning visual. Color-Coded Lists: Even a simple list where you highlight or color-code tasks by category (e.g., green for core work, yellow for admin, blue for breaks) can be a powerful visual aid. 4. Track and Adjust: The first chart you make might not be perfect, and that's okay! The goal is to track your time for a few days or a week and then compare it to your initial estimates. You might be surprised to see how much time goes into 'break' or how little into 'training' compared to what you thought. Use this data to adjust your schedule, reprioritize tasks, or even advocate for more support if you're consistently overworked in certain areas. Creating a 'work time visual' isn't just about accountability; it's about empowerment. It gives you concrete data to challenge those feelings of unproductiveness, celebrate your actual accomplishments, and make informed decisions about your work-life balance. I found that this simple chart not only validated my hard work but also gave me a clearer path to managing my energy throughout the day. Give it a try – you might just discover a newfound appreciation for your own efforts!
