How I Prepared For an Unmedicated Birth

After a long and traumatic first birth, I knew I wanted to have more control over my second. During my first labor, I underestimated the pain and exhaustion, thinking sheer willpower would be enough to get me through. I went in blind and unprepared, which led to multiple interventions, including pain medications, an epidural, and antibiotics due to being Group B Strep positive. This time, I was determined to approach labor differently, and here’s how I prepared for an unmedicated birth:

1. Staying Active During Pregnancy

I made it a priority to stay very active throughout my entire pregnancy. While this was beneficial for my physical health, it was even more impactful for my mental state. Pushing myself through workouts helped me build the mental strength I needed to push through labor.

2. Educating Myself

I immersed myself in learning by reading books, watching birth stories on YouTube, and listening to podcasts. Hearing about others’ unmedicated birth experiences helped me prepare mentally and ensured I wasn’t caught off guard by unexpected situations during labor.

3. Hiring a Doula

This was, without a doubt, the smartest decision I made. I wish I had hired a doula for my first birth! If you’re planning to have a baby, I highly recommend hiring one. Doulas provide invaluable emotional, physical, and informational support. If you’re curious about what a doula does, I can create a separate post about that. Generally, they cost anywhere from $500 to $1,500, but it was by far the best investment I made during my pregnancy.

... Read morePreparing for an unmedicated birth involves key strategies that can make a significant difference during labor. Many women who opt for unmedicated births cite the importance of physical preparation and mental fortitude. Staying active, as acknowledged in my journey, not only boosts physical health but is crucial for building the stamina needed during labor. Engaging in regular exercise helps women develop the strength and endurance required during contractions, ultimately making the labor feel more manageable. Another vital aspect is education. Understanding the birthing process through books, podcasts, and videos allows expectant mothers to anticipate various scenarios and manage their responses effectively. Moreover, seeking the support of a professional like a doula can provide immense benefits. Doulas assist with emotional, physical, and informational needs during labor, helping to create a calming environment that fosters a positive experience. They also offer guidance with pain management techniques, such as breathing exercises, and can help you communicate effectively with healthcare providers, ensuring your birth plan is respected. Financially, hiring a doula may seem like a luxury, but many find it to be a worthwhile investment that enhances their overall birth experience. Their support can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and a greater sense of satisfaction afterward. As more mothers share their positive experiences with unmedicated births, the conversation about informed decision-making surrounding labor continues to grow, empowering future mothers to take charge of their birth journeys.
