6 years ago, I gave birth to a baby who wasn’t genetically mine for the most incredible couple and it was a day I will never forget. Truly one of the best moments of my life aside from the birth of my own children.
I remember walking into my 40 week induction sooooo nervous. It was the first time I would be meeting my Intended Parents in person. My best friend drove me to the hospital and stayed with me in triage while the nurses went over paperwork. When my IPs arrived, every bit of anxiety I had went away. They were so grateful, so kind, and I felt so appreciated.
Going into my induction, I knew I wanted to try my hardest to deliver unmedicated. They hooked me up to the IV and started the induction process, and with induction there is really no predicting how your body will respond. Things were slow at first, and the nurses told my IPs they could grab food because it might be a while. But right after they left, everything changed quickly. I went from 3.5 cm to 10 cm in 15 minutes. Too late for an epidural, so it was time to put on my big girl pants and do it unmedicated.
As I was begging to push, the nurses scrambled to get the room ready. My mind was racing, completely confused at how I went from feeling totally fine to suddenly needing to push. I was so sad knowing my IPs were going to miss the birth, but also overwhelmed with joy because I was finally about to bring their baby safely into the world.
My IM had told me she wanted me to hold him for her if she didn’t make it in time. She just wanted him safe. As soon as the doctor made it into the room and gave me the green light to push, the nurse told me to turn over when I was ready. I turned onto my back and with one push, a healthy baby boy was in my arms. I was shocked and so incredibly proud of myself. I did it.
About 10 minutes later, my IPs arrived and I got to place their baby in his mother’s arms. I can’t describe that feeling. Everyone in the room was crying. It was beautiful and a moment that will stay with me forever.
Surrogacy gets such a bad reputation, as if babies are being taken from their birth mother, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Surrogacy is built on intention, love, trust, and choice. My surrogate baby has known nothing but love from the time he was a tiny embryo to now that he is 6 years old, and I am so honored to be a small part of his story. 🥹♥️

Surrogacy is often misunderstood and surrounded by many myths, but this heartfelt story reminds us of the deep love and intentionality that underpins this journey. Many surrogates describe feeling a profound emotional connection not only to the child but also to the intended parents, fostering a unique bond built on trust and mutual respect. Navigating an unmedicated induction, especially in an unexpected rapid labor, requires incredible physical and mental strength. Surrogacy journeys may come with uncertainties, but they also bring life-changing joy and fulfillment. It’s common for surrogates to face a whirlwind of emotions—from anxiety and nervousness before the birth to overwhelming pride and happiness when holding the baby for the first time. This story reflects how surrogacy transcends the simplistic notion of 'taking a baby from the birth mother.' Instead, it is a consciously chosen path full of empowerment and selflessness. The surrogate’s commitment to bringing new life safely into the world creates lifelong bonds and a shared story of love and care. The phrase "Homesick for a moment I can never go back to" encapsulates the complex feelings surrogates often experience. While they cherish the memories of pregnancy and birth, surrogates also accept that their role is unique and transient, focused on creating families rather than raising the child. If you’re considering surrogacy or simply want to understand more about this beautiful journey, remember it is built on the pillars of communication, legal clarity, and unwavering respect between all parties. Many surrogates find that their experience leaves an indelible impact, enriching their lives with unforgettable moments and heartfelt connections. Ultimately, surrogacy is a profound act of generosity. It demonstrates how modern families are formed through compassion and shared dreams, reminding us that love creates families in many forms.
