Hot take: it can be safe to co-sleep!

Cosleeping CAN Be Safe 💤

Hear me out- cosleeping isn’t automatically unsafe. In fact, it can be totally safe when done intentionally! When you take steps like following the Safe Sleep Seven, no loose bedding, and proper positioning.

The other thing is, in most countries, parents cosleep. It’s part of their culture and has been for generations. America is one of the only places that doesn’t recommend it, but let’s be real… the U.S. is not the gold standard for safety on everything🙃

The reality is, parents are already cosleeping, whether it’s recommended or not. The difference is doing it intentionally and safely, instead of accidentally in unsafe ways (like falling asleep on the couch).

At the end of the day, you know your baby and your family best. Safe sleep isn’t one size fits all and cosleeping can absolutely be part of that.🤎😴

... Read moreCo-sleeping, while often debated, is a common practice around the world, embraced by many cultures as a natural way to nurture the bond between parents and their babies. Understanding how to practice co-sleeping safely is crucial for parents who choose this approach. The Safe Sleep Seven is a helpful framework that includes key recommendations such as placing the baby on their back to sleep, ensuring the mattress is firm, and avoiding any loose bedding or soft objects near the infant. These measures significantly reduce the risk of accidental suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In addition to following safety guidelines, the intentional nature of co-sleeping sets it apart from accidental or unsafe sleeping arrangements, like falling asleep with a baby on a couch or armchair, which can be extremely hazardous. Parents who prepare their sleeping environment thoughtfully can enjoy the closeness and comfort co-sleeping offers without compromising safety. Furthermore, co-sleeping promotes easier nighttime feeding and helps establish a sense of security for the infant, which can improve overall sleep quality for the entire family. However, it’s essential to consider factors such as avoiding co-sleeping if the parent smokes, has consumed alcohol, or is extremely fatigued, as these increase risks. Culturally, co-sleeping is normalized in many countries beyond the U.S., reflecting diverse parenting traditions that support bonding and practical care. Recognizing this can help broaden understanding and reduce stigma surrounding co-sleeping practices. Ultimately, every family is unique, and safe sleep arrangements should be tailored to individual needs and circumstances. Consulting with pediatricians and trusted health professionals can provide personalized guidance, ensuring co-sleeping, if chosen, contributes positively to your baby's well-being and your peace of mind.
