From my personal experience during my partner’s pregnancy, I quickly learned how important it is to be mindful of what I say. One of the things that stood out was the damage caused by telling her to "just relax." Pregnancy brings a whirlwind of hormones and physical changes, and simply asking her to relax felt dismissive and invalidated her very real struggles with anxiety and pain. Another eye-opener was refraining from comparing her experience to others. Every pregnancy journey is unique, and trying to downplay her challenges by saying "others do this just fine" only made her feel misunderstood and isolated. It’s critical to acknowledge that her experience is her own. Avoiding the phrase "it’s just your hormones" was also key. Though it might be true, framing her feelings this way made her feel like her emotions were being reduced to clichés rather than being genuinely listened to. Pregnancy can be emotionally complex, and offering patience and validation has far greater impact. Encouraging her to feel happy all the time is unrealistic; she can love her pregnancy while also struggling. Sharing this understanding helped her feel less pressured to mask her difficulties. Lastly, instead of saying "I don’t know what you want me to do," I committed to learning and anticipating her needs. This proactive attitude eased the emotional load on her and strengthened our partnership. Overall, being thoughtful with words during pregnancy builds trust and emotional safety. Small changes in communication can significantly improve the pregnancy journey for both partners.
