Spinal Fusion & Plantar Fasciitis

At 67, this retired school teacher should be enjoying her golden years with friends and tennis. Instead, she’s fighting every day just to keep moving. Severe plantar fasciitis has robbed her of her joy, making it nearly impossible to play tennis—the one thing she loves most. She’s tried it all: foot injections, podiatrists, chiropractors—nothing has helped.

Add to that a recent 3-level cervical spine surgery (C5, C6, C7) to fix intense carpal tunnel, and a history of knee surgery, and her body feels like it’s falling apart. Her story is one of resilience, frustration, and the deep desire to live life on her own terms. If you or someone you love knows the pain of chronic conditions, this is a story worth watching. ⁩

... Read moreIt's incredibly disheartening when you're desperate for relief from something as debilitating as plantar fasciitis, and a treatment path you hoped would help, like visiting a chiropractor, doesn't quite yield the results you prayed for. I've been there, searching "can chiropractor help plantar fasciitis" countless times, only to find myself still struggling. While my personal journey, much like the retired teacher's, has been complex, involving more than just my feet, I've learned a lot about why chiropractic care might or might not work for this stubborn condition, and what else to consider when you feel like you've tried everything. Many people wonder, 'Can a chiropractor help with plantar fasciitis?' The answer, from what I've gathered, is often 'yes, for some.' Chiropractors don't just focus on the spine; they look at the body as an interconnected system. For plantar fasciitis, a chiropractor might examine your foot and ankle alignment, looking for misalignments in the small bones (tarsals and metatarsals) that could contribute to improper gait and strain on the plantar fascia. They might perform specific adjustments to these joints. But it doesn't stop at the foot. They'll often assess your knee, hip, and even spinal alignment, especially the lower back (lumbar spine), because issues higher up can drastically affect how weight is distributed through your legs and feet. Imagine a slight imbalance in your hips; it could force your foot to overpronate, putting extra stress on your arch. However, as some of us unfortunately discover, sometimes adjustments alone aren't enough. My own experience, and seeing others like the teacher's story, highlights that chronic plantar fasciitis can be a multi-faceted problem. For some, it might be purely mechanical. For others, inflammation, nerve impingement (which could relate to cervical spine issues or even lumbar spine issues affecting leg nerves), or even systemic factors could play a role. When I explored why my initial chiropractic visits didn't provide lasting relief, I realized the importance of a comprehensive approach. Beyond adjustments, a good chiropractor might also incorporate soft tissue work, like Graston technique or manual release, to break down scar tissue and improve flexibility in the calf muscles and plantar fascia. They might also prescribe specific stretches and strengthening exercises for the foot and calf, along with gait analysis to identify and correct walking patterns that exacerbate the condition. Some even recommend custom orthotics to provide better arch support and cushioning, giving the fascia a chance to heal. What if, like the teacher, you have other complex health issues like a spinal fusion or chronic knee pain? This adds another layer of complexity. A spinal fusion, even in the cervical spine, can alter overall body mechanics and posture, potentially influencing how stress is distributed throughout the kinetic chain, down to your feet. It becomes even more critical to find a practitioner who understands this holistic connection and can tailor treatment accordingly, or even collaborate with other specialists. If chiropractic care hasn't been your magic bullet, don't lose hope. I've learned that perseverance is key. Consider exploring physical therapy for targeted strengthening and stretching, dry needling for stubborn trigger points, or shockwave therapy which can stimulate healing. Sometimes, addressing inflammation through diet and supplements can also make a huge difference. The journey to relief can be long and frustrating, but by staying informed and exploring all avenues, you increase your chances of finding what truly works for your unique body. It’s about finding the right combination of treatments and understanding that sometimes, the pain in your foot is a symptom of a larger, interconnected issue in your body.
