considerations before saying ‘yes’ 💍

how long do you think you should date before getting engaged? please include if you’re single / married / divorced with this!

I am 30 years old. I’m in a relationship. we’ve been together for 6.5 years and we are still learning so much about ourselves and each other. I’m glad we didn’t let societal pressure force us to get engaged sooner than we were ready.

I’ve seen sooo many of my friends from high school and college get married AND divorced already. I just think marriage is a huge decision and you should make sure you’re really on board before going through with the engagement, wedding, paperwork, honeymoon, etc.

... Read moreDeciding to get engaged is a monumental step, and it's completely normal to feel uncertain about the timing or how to proceed. I’ve been there, and through my own journey and seeing friends go through theirs, I’ve realized it’s not just about how long you’ve been together, but what you’ve experienced and learned during that time. Many wonder, "how long should you date before getting engaged?" While there's no magic number, my experience suggests that a longer dating period, perhaps 4-5 years, allows you to truly see your compatibility through various life changes. Think about it: have you navigated grief together? Supported each other through job changes or career shifts? Handled the stress of moving or significant financial pressures? These are the real tests that reveal your true colors and how you function as a team during hardship, not just during the good times. This period fosters individual and shared growth, which is essential for a lasting commitment. To gain clarity when you're uncertain of how to proceed with an engagement, I've found that deep, open conversations are key. It's not just about feeling good together, but about discussing your core values, long-term goals, and future vision. This includes crucial topics like whether you want kids, your ideal living arrangements, and how you plan to achieve financial security together. Don't shy away from these serious discussions; they are the bedrock of a strong marriage. It's about building a foundation where every aspect of your life aligns, or at least you have a clear plan for how to make it align. When it comes to how to court someone effectively during this pre-engagement phase, it’s about more than just dates. It’s about intentionally building a partnership. Observe how your partner handles conflict, how they treat service staff, and how they react under pressure. Do you both actively listen? Can you resolve disagreements respectfully? Do you support each other's dreams and individuality? These are the moments that truly prepare you for the "engagement moment" and beyond. It’s about ensuring that when that ring comes out, you both feel an unwavering sense of readiness and excitement, not just because of the proposal itself, but because of the solid foundation you've built. And what about external influences, sometimes feeling like a "third person relationship" weighing in? Everyone, from well-meaning family to friends who’ve had their own relationship experiences, will have opinions. My own friends' divorces certainly made me pause and reflect. While it's wise to learn from others' experiences, remember that your relationship is unique. Listen to advice with an open mind, but ultimately, the decision to get engaged and marry is deeply personal and should be made by you and your partner, free from undue societal pressure or others' timelines. Trust your shared journey and the insights you've gained together.

4-5 years seems too long to me. I think two years is a good amount of time to know your partner and develop a deep connection

Whenever you are both on the same page. Not one forcing the other or coercing the other to take your relationship to the next step. It could be 4 months into dating or 15 years. There’s no exact science. I feel like people over complicate things… everyone has their own journey in life and it’s best not to compare.
