How often do you use a clarifying shampoo?

My hair has been suuuuper oily so I was recommended to try a clarifying shampoo to strip all of the oils out my hair. I know it worked because my hair felt super dry so I followed up with a moisturizing shampoo and deep condition. Should this be something that I add to my hair routine?

For context, I am a lazy natural who usually wears glueless wigs so my hair is always in cornrows. I oil my scalp about 3 times a week and wash biweekly.. sometimes longer.

... Read moreHey everyone! I recently shared my personal struggle with oily hair and how a clarifying shampoo swooped in for a much-needed deep cleansing session. Like many of you, I noticed my hair felt incredibly clean afterward, almost too clean – that dry, stripped feeling is real! It got me thinking: how often should we really be reaching for these powerful detoxifying shampoos, especially for us naturals with oily scalps or those who wear protective styles like cornrows under wigs? What Exactly Is a Clarifying Shampoo? Think of a clarifying shampoo as your hair's reset button. Unlike regular shampoos that cleanse lightly, clarifying shampoos are formulated with stronger surfactants that effectively remove product buildup, excess oil, hard water minerals, and environmental impurities that accumulate on your scalp and hair strands. This deep cleansing action is fantastic for promoting healthy hair growth by ensuring your follicles aren't suffocated by gunk. The white bottle I used even highlighted its detoxifying and impurity-removing properties for a healthier scalp! So, How Often Should We Use It? My Take & General Guidelines The big question: how often? For someone like me who oils her scalp three times a week and washes biweekly (sometimes longer!), the answer isn't as simple as 'once a month.' For Oily Hair & Scalps (Like Mine!): If your hair gets greasy quickly, or you use a lot of styling products, you might benefit from a clarifying wash every 2-3 weeks. This helps manage the oil production and keeps your scalp feeling fresh. I felt a huge difference after just one use, confirming its power to remove excess oils. For Heavy Product Users/Protective Styles: If you frequently use heavy butters, gels, or wear protective styles like cornrows and glueless wigs, buildup can be a major issue. A clarifying shampoo can be a godsend to remove all that residue. Consider using it every 2-4 weeks, depending on your product use and how long your styles last. General Recommendation: For most hair types without excessive oiliness or product use, once a month is a good starting point. This prevents over-stripping and maintains your hair's natural moisture balance. Avoid Daily/Every Wash: Based on my experience and what I've learned, using a clarifying shampoo everyday or even every wash is a definite no-go. It will lead to excessive dryness, frizz, and potentially damage your hair over time. My hair felt super dry even after one use, so imagine daily! Signs You Might Need a Clarifying Wash: Your hair feels heavy, dull, or lacks shine. Your usual shampoos aren't getting your hair truly clean. Products aren't working as effectively as they used to. Your scalp feels itchy or greasy soon after washing. You've been swimming frequently (chlorine buildup!). My Routine & Key Tips (Don't Skip This!) After that initial clarifying wash, my hair felt squeaky clean but also incredibly dry. This is why the follow-up is CRUCIAL! I immediately went in with a moisturizing shampoo and, more importantly, a deep conditioner. This step is non-negotiable to replenish moisture and restore your hair's pH balance. Focus the clarifying shampoo mainly on your scalp to combat oil and buildup, letting the suds run down the lengths of your hair to gently cleanse them without over-drying. A healthy, clean scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth! Finding the right frequency for your unique hair journey is a process. Listen to your hair; it will tell you what it needs. A clarifying shampoo can be a fantastic tool for a truly deep clean, but balance is key to keeping your hair vibrant, healthy, and moisturized.
