Controversial Decision I’m Making for My Son
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “your son needs a haircut!” But why? If he was a girl, I’d never hear that. I love my son’s hair and I don’t think he needs a haircut because it’s a “societal norm”. Will I get it cut later? Maybe. If he tells me he wants a haircut? Absolutely.
To me, hair is just hair. Want it a wild color? Cool. I keep my son’s hair clean, brushed, and maintained. I want my son to feel safe enough to decide things based on what he wants, not the box that others thinks he needs to fit in.

From the perspective of toddler development, supporting self-expression strengthens identity formation during critical early years. Children who feel safe exploring their preferences tend to develop higher self-esteem and better social resilience. This approach challenges traditional gender boxes and encourages diversity in personal expression. By embracing this controversial decision, I hope to inspire other parents to question arbitrary norms and prioritize their child’s voice. Our children deserve the freedom to explore who they are without pressure to conform. A haircut is just hair—but the lesson it teaches about autonomy and acceptance lasts a lifetime.
