is having an imaginary world an ADHD thing?

This has been my brain since childhood and I honestly didn’t realize it wasn’t universal until adulthood. I can slip into a whole imaginary universe without even noticing. And it’s not cute fantasy stuff. It’s detailed conversations, replayed childhood moments, future scenarios that feel too real, and weird little storylines that evolve every time I revisit them.

It usually happens when I’m overwhelmed or bored or overstimulated. I’ll “duck out” mentally and go straight into this world where everything feels calmer. But then I come back and feel disoriented, like I’ve been living two lives.

Some days it helps me cope. Other days it gets in the way of doing the simplest tasks.

I can’t tell if it’s an ADHD thing or something my brain just picked up along the way.

💬 Comment and tell me: does your brain build fake worlds too or is this just me?

... Read moreIt's fascinating to me how many of us with ADHD share this experience of living with a vibrant, often overwhelming, inner world. For so long, I thought everyone's brain was constantly "instantly playing storylines" or "imagining conversations" with non-existent characters, almost like a personal, never-ending Netflix series running in my head. It truly feels like "my brain lives in a whole other universe," and honestly, sometimes I struggle to keep up with both. I've come to believe this isn't just simple daydreaming; it's a hallmark of how some ADHD brains "see the world." The intensity, the detail, the way these scenarios evolve – it's incredibly immersive. When I'm understimulated, my mind creates its own stimulation. When I'm overstimulated, it becomes my escape hatch, a place where I can "zone out into an imaginary world" and find a sense of calm. It's a powerful coping mechanism, almost like an internal "illustration art" studio, constantly designing and redrawing reality to make it more manageable or simply more interesting. But there’s a flip side, isn’t there? While these internal narratives can be a wellspring of creativity and a way to process complex emotions, they can also make "real life feel fuzzy." I've lost count of the times I've been mid-conversation, only to realize my mind has drifted into an elaborate fantasy, leaving me disoriented when I snap back to reality. It impacts my ability to focus on mundane tasks, making simple chores feel monumental because my brain is always chasing a more compelling narrative. Understanding this connection has been a journey. I've learned to recognize patterns: when I'm stressed, bored, or anxious, my brain is more likely to retreat. Instead of fighting it entirely, I've tried to channel it. Sometimes, I'll dedicate specific time to journaling or creative writing, giving my imaginary worlds an outlet. Other times, it's about setting boundaries, using mindfulness techniques to gently guide my focus back to the present. It's about finding a balance between embracing this unique aspect of my brain and ensuring it doesn’t entirely hijack my ability to function in the real world. It’s a testament to the incredible adaptability of the human mind, especially one with ADHD. We're not just existing; we're building entire universes within ourselves. And while it presents its own set of challenges, it also offers a depth of experience and unique perspective that I wouldn't trade. It's a powerful reminder that there's more to "seeing the world" than just what's in front of our eyes. What's your brain building today?
