if he had been with me

this was my first read of 2025 and oh my GOSH was it a good one. I saw so so much of my younger self in the main girl, Autumn. reading it was like going into the past and giving teenage me a hug. obviously the plot strayed a little far from the issues that every single teenage girl deals with - teenage pregnancy, loss at a young age, etc - but it never felt entirely unrealistic and I think it handled the topics pretty well. and it was written in a way similar to how teenagers really would think and feel about it. I gave this book 4/5 stars, and I’m currently making my way through if only I had told her 🥲

... Read moreStepping into the world of 'If He Had Been With Me' by Laura Nowlin was an experience I won't soon forget. Like many of you searching for a raw and emotional read, I stumbled upon this book and was immediately drawn in by its reputation for tackling difficult subjects with a tender touch. As a fellow bookworm, I often look for stories that resonate deeply, and this one certainly did, earning a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me. What truly sets this novel apart is Laura Nowlin's incredible ability to craft a story that feels both heartbreakingly real and incredibly sweet, exactly as the Lemon8 BookClub notes on my e-reader image suggest: it will make you cry, but it's so sweet! The journey of Autumn, the main character, felt so familiar, mirroring many of the confusing and intense emotions of youth. It’s rare to find a book that so accurately captures the essence of a teenage girl's inner world, making it incredibly relatable and universal. Many of you might be curious about the author, Laura Nowlin, and her distinctive writing style. She has a unique talent for exploring complex themes like young love, friendship, loss, and the search for purpose with remarkable sensitivity. This book, an absolute standout in her bibliography, delves into the lives of two childhood friends and how their intertwined destinies unfold against a backdrop of significant life events. It addresses challenging topics such as teenage pregnancy and profound loss at a young age, not sensationally, but with a nuanced understanding of their emotional impact. She truly understands how teenagers think and feel, making the narrative flow authentically. For those who appreciate powerful quotes that stick with you, 'If He Had Been With Me' is rich with them. While I won't spoil the most poignant lines, the book is filled with moments of profound reflection on love, regret, and the 'what ifs' that linger in our minds. It's the kind of story that prompts you to underline passages and revisit them long after you've turned the last page. The emotional depth is so palpable that it truly explains why so many readers, myself included, find themselves shedding tears while simultaneously cherishing every word. If you're looking for other books by the author, I've heard 'If Only I Had Told Her' continues this emotional journey, and I’m personally excited to dive into it next! Whether you’re exploring different paperback covers for your collection or simply looking for a new book review to guide your next read, I wholeheartedly recommend 'If He Had Been With Me.' It’s a beautifully written narrative that will stay with you, prompting reflection on your own past and the powerful bonds we form. It’s more than just a story; it’s an emotional experience that reminds us of the fragility and beauty of life and love.

I wanna read that if I have told her, but I think it’s by the same person and I didn’t know that the book was blue. I thought it was like red, broken hearts.
