Following up on my last post about what I do when I feel totally overstimulated, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why gaming, especially stress-free games like STRAY, has become such a lifesaver for me. You know that feeling when adulting can be overwhelming, and your brain just feels like it's buzzing with too much input? That's exactly when I reach for my controller. Gaming isn't just about escaping; for me, it's about finding a focused activity that can gently pull my mind away from the noise without adding more pressure. When I'm overstimulated, competitive games or anything requiring quick decisions and high stakes just makes things worse. That's why STRAY is pure perfection. As the OCR reminds me, it's a game where you get to be a cat and simply explore. There’s no rush, no enemies to fight (mostly!), and the puzzles are intuitive and calming. Just wandering through the beautifully rendered cyberpunk world as a curious feline, jumping on ledges, knocking things over – it's incredibly therapeutic. It allows my brain to engage just enough to forget what was overwhelming me, but not so much that I feel drained. But what if STRAY isn't your jam, or you've already finished it? Don't worry, there's a whole world of 'overstimulated-friendly' games out there! I've found that cozy games, simulation games, and puzzle games without timers are fantastic alternatives. Think about titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where you can customize your island, fish, catch bugs, and interact with adorable villagers at your own pace. Stardew Valley is another gem; farming, mining, and building relationships in a charming pixelated world can be incredibly grounding. Even simple puzzle games like Unpacking, where you're just organizing belongings into a new home, can offer that satisfying, low-stress engagement. The key is to look for games that prioritize exploration, creativity, or gentle problem-solving over combat or intense strategy. Beyond gaming, my full routine for when I'm overstimulated always includes a moment to consciously 'breathe with me!' It sounds simple, but sometimes I forget how powerful a few deep breaths can be. I've learned that pairing this with a calming activity like gaming creates a powerful combo. Before I even pick up the controller, I'll take a few slow, deep breaths, focusing purely on the sensation of air entering and leaving my body. This helps to ground me and prepare my mind to fully immerse myself in the game, rather than just using it as a distraction. Remember, everyone's way of coping with overstimulation is unique. What works for me might be different for you, but I hope sharing my experiences gives you some ideas. Whether it's exploring a virtual world as a cat in STRAY, tending to a virtual farm, or just taking a few moments to breathe, finding those small moments of calm can make a huge difference when the world feels like it's buzzing too loud.
