The Hardest Part Of Becoming

God is far more concerned with our formation than our comfort.

Israel wasn’t simply led out of Egypt. They had to be formed in the wilderness before they could steward the Promised Land. Moses spent forty years in Midian before leading a nation. David was anointed king long before he wore the crown. Even Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness before beginning His public ministry. God often prepares people in places they would rather leave.

That doesn’t mean God causes every hardship. We live in a fallen world where suffering, sin, and brokenness are real. But Scripture repeatedly shows that God can redeem hardship by using it to shape His people into the image of Christ (Romans 8:28-29). Becoming is not just about arriving at a destination. It’s about being formed into someone who reflects Jesus along the way.

... Read moreOne of the most profound realizations I’ve had in my spiritual journey is understanding that becoming who God calls us to be involves intentional formation, often through seasons that feel uncomfortable or even painful. As highlighted through biblical figures such as Moses’ 40 years in Midian and Jesus’ wilderness experience, God’s preparation often takes place in places we might prefer to escape. In my own life, I’ve wrestled with the frustration of waiting and wondering why I’m still in a difficult season when it feels like the breakthrough should have happened already. But over time, embracing the idea that hardship isn’t just to be endured but used by God to grow endurance, patience, and faith, has transformed my perspective. Like gold refined in fire, these challenges reveal our true character and give God the opportunity to shape us more deeply. I’ve found that God’s silence during trials isn’t absence but a quiet presence, allowing space for us to develop trust and obedience independent of immediate answers. Every choice to say "yes" to God despite fear, doubt, or discomfort is part of the becoming process. It’s not about arriving at a destination unscathed but about being molded into someone who reflects Jesus in attitude and action. This journey means recognizing that requests for God to remove difficulties can sometimes overlook the fact that He is using those very difficulties to answer prayers for growth in faith, wisdom, and perseverance. By leaning into His presence and promises, we can persevere, grow stronger in character, and emerge mature and complete, equipped for the purpose God has prepared for us.
