Beginner Exercises For Postpartum “Mom Butt” 🍑

Throughout pregnancy, as the baby grows and the belly expands, many women compensate for a weakened core by clenching and tucking their glutes. After childbirth, when core strength is even more compromised, this clenching of the glutes becomes a crucial adaptive mechanism for stability.

This eventually leads to conditions called “mom butt”, which describe the weakened and flattened appearance of the glutes. Adding exercises that strengthen the glute muscles are an excellent starting point for new moms who are just beginning their fitness journey.

Try incorporating these moves into your routine:

1. Squat Hip Adduction: 3 sets of 12-15 reps

2. Seated Band Abduction: 3 sets of 15 reps

3. Clam Bridge: 3 sets of 12 reps each side

... Read moreOh, 'mom butt' – it's a real thing, and if you're a new mama, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about! After carrying a baby and going through childbirth, our bodies go through so many changes. For me, it felt like my glutes just… disappeared, or at least weren't firing like they used to. That constant clenching during pregnancy to support my growing belly, and then the core weakness postpartum, really flattened things out. But trust me, you're not alone, and we can absolutely work to get that strength and shape back! It's not just about aesthetics, though. While getting that 'mom jeans butt' back feels great, strong glutes are crucial for so much more. They support your lower back, improve your posture (especially with all that baby-holding!), and give you the power and stability you need for daily mom life, whether it's lifting car seats or chasing toddlers. When our glutes are weak, other muscles, like our lower back, tend to overcompensate, leading to aches and pains – something no new mom needs more of! Before you jump into any intense glute flexing butt routine, especially postpartum, it's so important to start gently. Think of it as re-introducing your muscles to movement. I always recommend a short warm-up that includes some pelvic tilts and gentle hip circles to get the blood flowing and wake up those sleepy glutes. Let's break down those beginner exercises a little more, because understanding them helps with better activation: Squat Hip Adduction: This one is a gem for targeting multiple areas. When you're performing your squats with a resistance band around your thighs, focus on pressing out against the band as you squat down, and then squeezing your inner thighs in as you stand up. This dual action really helps to engage both your glutes and your adductors, giving you that rounded shape. Remember to keep your chest lifted and your core engaged – think about hugging your baby close with your abs! I found that focusing on a full range of motion, within comfort, made a huge difference. Seated Band Abduction: This seated band abduction exercise is incredibly effective for isolating your glute medius, which is key for hip stability and that side-butt shaping. When you're sitting with the band around your thighs, like in the picture, make sure your back is supported and you're not leaning. The movement comes from your hips, pushing your knees out against the band. It's not about how far you can push, but how well you can feel that muscle working. Try to hold the outward position for a second or two to really feel the burn! Clam Bridge: The Clam Bridge is fantastic for targeting the glute medius and minimus, which are often underdeveloped. Lying on your side with a band, lift your hips into a bridge while simultaneously opening your top knee like a clam shell. This move helped me immensely with hip stability and getting rid of some of that wobbly feeling I had after pregnancy. Make sure your hips stay stacked and you're not rolling backward. It’s all about controlled movement! Remember, consistency is more important than intensity, especially when you're starting out. Three sets of 12-15 reps, as recommended, is a great starting point for building endurance and strength. Listen to your body, take breaks when you need them, and celebrate every small victory. Getting your mama butt back to feeling strong and confident is a journey, not a race. You've got this, new mom!
