Let’s Get Real About Postpartum Rage

We hear a lot about postpartum depression and anxiety, but what about postpartum rage? If you’ve found yourself snapping at your partner, yelling at your kids, or feeling irrationally angry at things that never bothered you before—this post is for you.

What Is Postpartum Rage?

Postpartum rage is intense, sudden anger during the postpartum period. It’s often tied to hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the overwhelming demands of being a mom.

I never thought I’d experience something like this. As someone who doesn’t typically get angry, I felt so ashamed of the way I was feeling. I thought I was just bad at handling things. But the truth is, postpartum rage is more common than we realize.

Did You Know?

Studies show that 25-50% of moms experience postpartum rage, often alongside depression or anxiety. Yet, it’s something we rarely talk about, leaving so many of us feeling alone.

What It Can Look Like

• Feeling easily frustrated or angry with your partner, family, or even your pets.

• Snapping at small things that wouldn’t normally bother you.

• Some experience feeling anger toward their kids or baby, and then overwhelmed with guilt.

These feelings don’t make you a bad mom—they make you human.

When to Seek Help

If these feelings are constant, feel out of control, or are affecting your relationships, it might be time to talk to a doctor or therapist. Getting help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

You Are Not Alone

I wish someone had told me postpartum rage was normal. If this resonates with you, I hope this post helps you feel less alone. You’re not failing—you’re navigating one of the hardest seasons of motherhood.

Have you experienced postpartum rage? Let’s normalize this conversation. Share your story or questions below.

... Read moreIt’s one thing to hear about postpartum depression and anxiety, but when the intense wave of postpartum rage hit me, I felt completely blindsided. I remember staring at my reflection, not recognizing the woman who was snapping at her loved ones over the smallest things. The shame was suffocating, making me wonder if I was truly failing at motherhood. But the truth is, this isn't about being a bad mom; it's about navigating an incredibly challenging and overlooked aspect of the postpartum journey. Let’s get real about postpartum rage, because acknowledging it is the first step towards healing. For me, the anger often felt like a pressure cooker building up inside, ready to explode at any moment. It wasn't just irritability; it was a potent, engulfing heat that made rational thought impossible. I started to notice my triggers: lack of sleep, feeling unheard, endless chores, or simply the constant demands of a newborn with no break. Understanding these patterns was crucial. Once I could identify what usually set off my postpartum anger, I could sometimes preemptively address them or at least brace myself. In those moments when the rage felt overwhelming, I tried to implement a few strategies that helped me regain some control. One of the simplest yet most effective was the "pause and breathe" technique. If I felt myself about to erupt, I’d try to take a deep breath and count to ten, or even step into another room for a minute (after ensuring my baby was safe, of course). This brief separation, even just for 60 seconds, often gave me enough space to prevent an outburst and re-evaluate the situation with a slightly clearer head. It wasn't always easy, and sometimes the anger still won, but even trying felt like a step forward. Another significant step for me was communicating with my partner. It felt incredibly vulnerable to admit that I was struggling with such intense anger, especially when I knew he was also exhausted. But opening up about my postpartum rage allowed us to become a team against it, rather than feeling like I was battling it alone. We established code words or signals for when I was feeling overwhelmed, and he learned to recognize the signs too. This allowed him to step in, offer help, or simply give me the space I needed without me having to escalate to an angry outburst. Self-care, even in tiny doses, also made a huge difference. When you’re in the throes of new motherhood, grand gestures of self-care feel impossible. But I found that small, consistent acts could chip away at the constant pressure. A five-minute hot shower, listening to a favorite song, stepping outside for some fresh air, or even just sitting down with a cup of tea – these small moments of reprieve helped to lower my overall stress levels and, consequently, the likelihood of a rage episode. It's about finding what replenishes even a tiny bit of your energy. Remember, seeking help from a professional isn't a sign of weakness but immense strength. If your postpartum anger feels constant or overwhelming, please know that support is available and you absolutely deserve it. You are not alone on this journey.
