From Salmon Vertebrae to Handmade Earrings
Most people don’t think twice about salmon bones, but with a little patience, they can become beautiful pieces of wearable art.
For this project, I:
• Carefully cleaned each vertebra by hand.
• Removed any remaining tissue and cleaned out the spinal canal.
• Soaked the bones in Dawn dish soap to help remove oils.
• Used 3% hydrogen peroxide to naturally whiten and disinfect them.
• Allowed them to dry completely before incorporating them into my beadwork.
I love exploring ways to use natural materials in my jewelry while honoring the resourcefulness that comes from using more of what nature provides. Each piece is unique because no two vertebrae are exactly alike.
Would you wear earrings made with real salmon vertebrae?

Creating jewelry from natural materials like salmon vertebrae requires patience, care, and a respect for the environment. From my own experience, the process of hand-cleaning each bone is almost meditative, connecting me deeply with the materials I use. After removing tissue and soaking the vertebrae in dish soap, the use of 3% hydrogen peroxide is essential not only to whiten the bones but also ensures they are safe to wear by disinfecting them thoroughly. Allowing sufficient drying time is crucial to avoid any odors and to ensure the bones integrate well with beadwork. Incorporating salmon vertebrae into jewelry like earrings also adds a meaningful story and a personal touch to wearable art. Each vertebra's unique shape means no two pieces are exactly the same, perfect for those who seek one-of-a-kind accessories that celebrate natural beauty and craftsmanship. This approach is also aligned with sustainable crafting practices, as it utilizes parts often discarded, promoting a smaller environmental footprint. Wearing jewelry made from salmon vertebrae can spark conversations about environmental conservation, indigenous art, and the creativity involved in repurposing natural materials. Whether you are passionate about eco-friendly fashion or inspired by Alaska Native art traditions, these earrings represent a harmonious blend of culture, sustainability, and artistry. I encourage anyone interested in handmade crafts or sustainable fashion to try incorporating unconventional natural materials like bones into their work, opening up endless possibilities for innovative, eco-conscious design.
