Proverbs 17:28 Explained

Proverbs 17:28

“Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.”

‭‭

You have to be careful what you say and around who you say it.

Not everyone will rejoice with you in the good things happening in your life.

If a fool can discern this, they are wise in doing so.

... Read moreIn my personal experience, Proverbs 17:28 offers timeless advice that resonates deeply in everyday life. The phrase “Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues” highlights that silence can often speak louder than words, especially when words might betray our lack of understanding. I recall situations where choosing to remain silent actually helped me avoid misunderstandings or conflicts. Often, we underestimate the power of listening more and speaking less. It’s not just about staying quiet but about exercising discernment—knowing when to speak and when silence best serves the situation. Moreover, the verse reminds us to be cautious about who we share our thoughts and victories with. Not everyone in our life will celebrate our successes or have our best interest at heart. This awareness encourages us to guard our hearts and words, sharing selectively and wisely. This proverb also encourages humility. Even if we feel insufficient in knowledge or wisdom, adopting the habit of thoughtful silence can make us appear more prudent to others. It’s a practical form of wisdom that anyone can apply, regardless of their level of understanding. In essence, Proverbs 17:28 teaches that wisdom is not just in having knowledge but in how and when we express ourselves. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best response is no response at all, letting silence be a sign of strength and understanding.
