3 productivity tips that changed how I work

6/29 Edited to

... Read moreOne of the most powerful productivity shifts I've experienced is the concept of theming your days. Rather than scattering your focus across various tasks, dedicating full days to a single mode of work—such as administration, creative tasks, or community engagement—minimizes context switching, which can silently erode your output and cost precious mental energy. For example, I assign Mondays for administrative duties and reserve Thursdays exclusively for creative writing. This structure allows me to immerse myself fully without the constant cognitive overhead of switching tasks. Another game-changing tip is to "eat the frog"—start your day by tackling the hardest or most daunting task first. Our decision-making energy is at its peak in the morning, so dedicating this prime time to your most important and challenging work can set a powerful tone for the rest of the day. Initially, this felt intimidating, but after adopting this habit, I've noticed reduced procrastination and a strong sense of accomplishment early on. Lastly, protecting deep work has revolutionized my focus. Setting aside uninterrupted blocks of time—ideally two hours—without distractions like notifications or multitasking has boosted my productivity remarkably. I treat this time as sacred, blocking it on my calendar and informing colleagues when I’m unavailable. This disciplined approach has helped me enter 'flow' states more often, producing better-quality work in less time compared to six hours of fragmented effort. Incorporating these shifts into my routine hasn’t just increased my productivity; it’s also brought greater peace and joy to my workdays—helping me work smarter, not harder.
